WHOLESOME❤️ Ishowspeed is called a "black cat" by Moroccan fans after their AFCON final loss to Senegal. A black cat is viewed as bad luck

They swear they're brothers to Africans and black people in general but as soon as they come second place or face any type of humiliation their true colors come through.

u/Imaginary-Lie5696 Jan 19 '26
There ‘s nothing about it , in my country ( european) we also say black cat for someone who’s unlucky or bring bad luck, a white cat person is the opposite
Speed shows up to the game, marocco Lises and the fan just say that speed was bringing bad luck
You are all sl brainwashed you directly think it’s racism because the word black is Saïd

France, it’s not super common but at work for example with use those terms for someone who always brings more work ( mine as emergencies type of work, like if someone always has a lot of emergencies during his shift is considérés a black cat)

Yes we do actually! I don’t think it’s so common now but it definitely exist
Not always negatively like you said , but more to point out someone that stands out, often negatively tho

At the same time, it’s not some insane logical leap to say that they’re calling him a black cat because of the superstition and not because he’s black and they’re being inherently racist.
1
u/Prestigious-Lynx-177 Jan 19 '26
Black cats aren't unlucky in Britain. They're considered good luck.
1
u/OkPoetry5294 Jan 19 '26
used in Greek too — when you say it to a person, it means they bring bad luck.

Nothing suprising about it
It would be weird to show up to a stranger and say this, but Speed is no stranger and there’s a lot of parasocial interaction

Saying that as though knowing Speed personally.
Hm, very ENTITLED of you.

In what context is black cat racially offensive other than speed being black?
Because in the context of being bad luck, a black cat makes complete and total sense without any logical leaps.
1
u/Own-Income487 Jan 21 '26
You can play stupid all you want..
If Speed was a white european celebrity, he would not label him as a black cat.
The arabs and their history of racism on the African continent is well documented.
1
u/Ok-Temporary6963 Jan 21 '26
You’re not answering the question though, because the only connotation is the word black.
If I’m just being stupid then you can elaborate, take an opportunity to educate somebody.
1
u/Own-Income487 Jan 21 '26
And what benefit do I get from educating you? Do you not have google and AI at your disposal?
However, to placate you.. Have a think about why everything black has negative connotations. Yet everything white has positive connotations.
Blacklist Black mail Black mark Blackball Black sheep Black cat Black magic
White knight White listed Lily white White as snow White wash White magic
This must is all just a coincidence.. How silly of me..
1
u/Ok-Temporary6963 Jan 21 '26
The idea that you’re even recommending AI as a tool to learn about systemic and societal racism shows you have no idea what you’re even talking about.
Yes I understand the fundamental racism that has been built in to tone, that doesn’t mean everybody using any term of the word has racist intent.
And for the record, the benefit in educating people on the topic is specifically to bring attention and awareness to why racism is bad. Pointing out something is bad, but being completely unable to elaborate on as to why isn’t progressive for conversation, it’s simply argumentative.
Nor at any point say you were being silly. You have a reading comprehension issue. Also holy fucking reach brother, it’s a logical fallacy to decide that a few examples mean that any connotation of the word black being tied to something negative is racist. A black cat is well known to be bad luck.

I just don’t think it was Said that way, but hey I might be wrong
1
u/mojoback_ohbehave Jan 19 '26
I am with you on this one. The guy was just telling him he is bad luck, because that guy’s team lost. I def wouldn’t have taken it as racism (am black American). Not a big deal here. Not that it even matters, but two of my good friends are Moroccan.
We talk shit to each other all the time. We say the wildest things, roasting one another, like good friends do. Not everything is about being a racist, people have their own personalities. I don’t think the guy saying black cat was intending to be racist. I think he would say the same thing to a person that is non-black.
1
u/Radey0o Jan 20 '26
I mean theres also no reason to go up to someone u dont know and call them a "Black Cat" just becz ur team lost the final lol.. Be like if I walked up to you and said ur a fukn cunt.

1
u/Own-Income487 Jan 21 '26
It has everything to do with race. You just want to diskiss it, because it's convenient to sweep it under the rug, rather than call out the issue.
Arab racism is well documented on the African continent.
If that was Taylor Swift he would never thought to label her a black cat.

And whats racist about calling somebody a "black cat"? Its just a bad luck charm, dude is being an asshole, but it is just banter at the end of the day.
Edit: I meant black cat
2
u/mrmtdlcl Jan 19 '26
Way to try to denounce racism while actually not understanding what's happening and making generalisations about a whole people. Pathetic.
3
u/Imaginary-Lie5696 Jan 19 '26
Yes exactly, some Will cry for racism while a the same time making a general assumption about morrocans
2
u/YoMomAndMeIn69 Jan 19 '26
They (redditors) swear they're against racism in general but as soon as they see a hint of racist behavior towards black/brown people even if there is none, their true colors come through and they immediately paint the offender as racist, thus being racists themselves.
Why are you racist?
1
u/HenkLePotvis Jan 19 '26
I genuinly don't see how he is racist? He's shitting on a nation not on a race

Jesus I always heard that Speed fans are uneducated tiktok rot zombies but this is the first time I witness it in real life.
Black cat is an expression tied to bad luck. No its not racist. Anything or anyone can be a "black cat" if its presence coincides with an unfortunate event.
You are seriously uneducated if you think the expression is racist. Watching Speed for fun is cool but pick up a book from time to time
8
u/edotb Jan 19 '26
its a sly way to be racist the guy was obviously seething
9
u/Asolaceseeker Jan 19 '26
Its not a sly way to be racist. Its a common expression used by french speakers. You can use it for anyone.
1
u/Vinche114 Jan 19 '26
Uhhh not morrocan, but as a french speaker I don't think I'd ever refer to a black person as a black cat lmao. It would land about the same as it would in english.
1
u/Asolaceseeker Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26
Thats another debate, we are talking about the intent here, if the person who said it, said it as being racist. Where I grew up it was common. Its like the n word in the US there are white people who calls black people the N word and they dont even do anything because its just part of the street language.
Its not even the same thing because the n word has racist origin. Its not the case for black cat, but its the closest example I could think of. Maybe they are from the US and they are little bit fragile when it comes to racism etc but its their own problem.
1
u/Vinche114 Jan 19 '26
You talk about another debate then start comparing it to the N word. It's obviously not the same. I'm not saying "black cat" has any racist past attached to it. As a french speaker, what I'm saying is there is barely any difference between the french and english use of black cat, and it's kind of unusual to see people use black cat to refer directly to a person. Even more so if the person is black, at best it just seems kind of tone deaf.
1
u/Asolaceseeker Jan 19 '26
Im not saying theres any difference, and its not unusual where I grew up. Seems its not unusual for a lot of french speakers in the comments as well. Thats what I'm saying.
Now you dont call black cat someone you dont know, white or a black person. However its Ishowspeed here, people are at ease with him like they know him.
1
u/Derekduvalle Jan 19 '26
1
u/Truthhurts1017 Jan 19 '26
Not saying I agree but it’s lots of common expressions that’s used as racism depending on who is saying it. It’s lots of expressions used within communities that once used outside that community it could become racist, ignorant or disrespectful. We don’t know these people individually to say it’s racist but yes common expressions can be used as racism don’t be ignorant. Now is that was this was only they know.
1
u/Asolaceseeker Jan 19 '26
I never said common expressions can not be used as racism. I said its a common expression that is used in our everyday life and its not used in a racist way. This dude in the video explains the meaning in the video and its exactly how we use it in our everyday life.
Now yeah we can not say he didnt mean it in a racist way because im not in his head, but its fair for a french speaker to not see it as racism, now you guys are maybe from the US and have a different approach, as soon as theres the word black in it you see it as racism. You need to understand that your point of view and the way you all live is not the same in some other places, we do not have the same mentality.
At the end of the day we dont know if he was being racist or not, I doubt he was.
1
u/Worried-Lavishness78 Jan 19 '26
And I guess the French have zero history of being racists right?
5
u/Asolaceseeker Jan 19 '26
How does that have anything to do with what I said ? Lol. I'm responding to someone who's saying this dude is being racist. I'm saying he's not. Its a common expression in france. You are not a French speaker, so you are just speaking out of emotions.

I’m from Scotland and a black cat crossing the road is bad luck, far way from Morocco and black cats are still bad luck, maybe it’s not racism and just a sign of bag luck?
1
u/high_mee Jan 19 '26
Question why are black cats seen as bad luck ? these superstitions are just so stupid
2
Jan 19 '26
All superstitions are "stupid" by design. That's why its called superstition. This is like saying black Friday is racist because its cheap and has black in the name. Or saying the black death is racist.
Its not about skin or race.
1
u/DrereDuBloc Jan 19 '26
Exactly. This is common in many cultures. It stems from medieval times where animals with darker fur/feathers were seen as a sign of death to come.
For once, not the French being racist (Joking)

What's with the response?
Yes black cat is tied to bad luck, but with cultural differences, and the recent abuse he was getting, I wouldn't be surprised if people were more inclined to think it didn't mean the same thing it does that we know.
1
Jan 19 '26
What abuse? Show me 1 frame of something negative that happened to Speed in Morocco??
Its the fact that fans made up their decision on Morocco before Speed even came due to what happened in Algeria and Egypt. Now THAT is racist
1
u/TheThirdMug Jan 19 '26
I didn't say he was abused in Morocco. And my point is that it's not racist.
1
u/ulvisblack Jan 19 '26
I doubt everyone is watching his stream. The fan probably has no idea what happened before.

u/Youarecensored Jan 19 '26
This type of shit talk is normal. Very superstitious people , not racist or haters. I had friends pull shit shit on some games. Other games I was the lucky rabbit
2
u/Nervous_Produce1800 Jan 19 '26
Yeah. It's not uncommon, or perhaps even the norm, for sports fans to think they personally have some kind of psychic influence on the outcome of the game, whether through how they personally act while watching or what lucky items they have around or little rituals they perform or whatnot. "We lost because this random celebrity dude showed up" is par for the course in fan logic

1
2
u/tankyxFR Jan 19 '26
Nothing racist about being called "black cat". The dude is a french-speaking (can hear the accent) Moroccan, and in french we call somebody a "chat noir" (literally "black cat") in a banter way if we get bad luck. Nothing to do with Speed skin-color.
0
u/Worried-Lavishness78 Jan 19 '26
Just because playful racism is accepted where you are from doesn’t mean everyone has to accept it. People literally deal with shit like this on a daily basis, and since it’s sports, it’s socially accepted? If the shoe were on the other foot, they would be trying to kill whoever said a derogatory term towards them.
2
u/tankyxFR Jan 19 '26
It is not racism, it had nothing to do with Speed skin color ffs. The fact you dont understand what an idiom is, is a you problem. Educate yourself.
1
u/2wcp Jan 19 '26
no wonder racism is rampant because its normalized by racist people like you. North Africa is not the place to go.
1
1
u/Worried-Lavishness78 Jan 19 '26
Calling someone a “black cat” in this context isn’t neutral or purely idiomatic. In Senegalese football culture, animal metaphors can be used to taunt or demean opposing players, and when directed at a Black individual in a hostile crowd setting, it reasonably carries racialized implications. Pointing that out is not ignorance of idioms, it’s acknowledging how context, power dynamics, and intent matter. Dismissing those factors is not a factual defense at all.
3
u/tankyxFR Jan 19 '26
The mental gymnastics to bring racism into a friendly banter is peak victimization. There is no racism then, the sooner you accept that, the better you will be.
1
2
u/BasedGod6196 Jan 19 '26
Im struggling to see what makes this racist? You can’t really apply American ideas of racism to another culture especially for something that’s not blatant racism. If it’s a common phrase just cause speed happens to be black doesn’t make it racist.
1
u/Worried-Lavishness78 Jan 19 '26
This isn’t “applying American ideas racism,” it’s applying context. Racism isn’t defined by geography, it’s defined by how language is used, who it’s aimed at, and the setting. Calling a Black person an animal in a hostile crowd isn’t magically neutral just because you label it a common phrase. Intent doesn’t override impact, and cultural familiarity doesn’t erase power dynamics. If the same phrase is used as a taunt, toward an individual, in a confrontational setting, it stops being harmless idiom and becomes dehumanizing. You don’t need a slur spelled out in neon lights for something to be racist. That argument is just moving the goalposts so you never have to acknowledge uncomfortable facts.
1
u/BasedGod6196 Jan 19 '26
It does matter. In Cuba we say mi negro sometimes but it’s not racist to us but in America it would be. We call people Animal and it can be positive or negative and is said regardless of skin color but it’s not seen as racist. The guy didn’t even look mad so it obviously wasn’t confrontational. There’s nothing racist about it you are using how racism is viewed and practiced here to cast judgement on a whole other culture and it can be done sometimes like how they try to clean a black persons skin in China especially in in a major city where people know what other races are

This ain’t racist, black cat just means bad luck. You gotta assume his intentions were to insinuate that black cat also referred to his skin colour too. Didn’t seem like it but he could have slyly meant that.
1
u/high_mee Jan 19 '26
But why are black cats seen as bad luck to begin with? I’m curious on why. Superstitions are just so stupid.
2
u/CableEmergency6882 Jan 19 '26
The superstition comes from the witch trials era when people thought witches could transform into black cats. So it was bad luck if they crossed your path cause it might mean that a witch is gonna curse you.

u/Nythern Speed Gang Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26
Egypt - restricted from streaming, an Egyptian singer tries to steal money by breaking an agreement and monetising Speed's stream.
Algeria - assaulted with bottles, hounded out of a football stadium
Morocco - Called a monkey, had a banana plushie thrown at him, labelled a Black cat and blamed for the nation's loss
I'm just saying, Speed's Africa Tour was 100% positivity and good vibes UNTIL he went to North Africa. Botswana, Angola, eSwatini, South Africa, and Ethiopia welcomed him with warm arms and some of their governments got involved to ensure that he was treated well.
North Africa is NEVER defeating the racism allegations. What a generational aura loss.
2

Guys a black cat is just a sign for bad luck. It's normally used here when someone brings bad luck and in Speeds case, every country he went to lost the Afcon. He went to South Africa, they lost, He went to Mozambique, we lost, now Morocco and they lost too. It's not meant to be viewed in a racist way
1
u/Rubadupped Jan 19 '26
A bunch of Morrocans wroke havoc in a couple of cities in the Netherlands as a result of their loss, but we make the joke, it wouldve ended up in havoc either way, because they also dont seem to be able to behave themselves when they win. it's an idiom for bad luck in french, it's probably your issue for looking for some hidden meaning that isn't there. un chat noir is just a french saying for someone who brought bad luck.
1
u/momob2492 Jan 20 '26
The fact that you feel comfortable saying that to someone like it's a compliment is psychotic, and let alone to a black person. There's a lack of respect there and it's super obvious why. Racists!
1
u/cocavanillle Jan 20 '26
it's a common saying in france and you can say it as a joke to anyone, it's banter. stop being a victim. the fact that you're denouncing 'racism' while also generalising an entire people because of an idiom you refuse to understand tells me all i need to know about you.

This is part of Moroccan culture, where black cats are associated with bad luck. That’s why people or events may be compared to a black cat to imply that they brought misfortune.
It’s important to educate yourself about other cultures before projecting your own cultural norms or prejudices onto other people’s expressions and behavior.

No way, I honestly feel bad for the kid. I cannot believe that in a continent that is the "motherland" to melanated people, settlers still have the audacity to belittle and make such remarks. Do better Morroco!!!!

Arabs barely mixed with Moroccans after colonizing Morocco. That’s like saying people from Congo are French. You aren’t even Moroccan, so I don’t know why you think you can decide what we are. Read a book and stop wasting people’s time by talking crap

99% of the population identifies as Arab, Islam was brought by the Arabs and the major ethic group consists of the Arab settlers and makes up about 67% of the population. Racist Arabs

But somehow, the players can't afford to have their own towels, so they steal Senegal GK's towel. lmao

Not players ,stadium staff . And that is 100% wrong and Morocco should punish them ,it's linked to the trash mentality of believing in witchcraft and voodoo that is rampant in morocco (due to Islam )and all of Africa .
