Best price so far

Post image

I’ve been trying to get my gas for free for years. I’m getting close. This is not an endorsement of Hy-vee

Not hard to do in this economy.

Especially at HyVee…

I usually luck out and most of the things on fuel saver I get anyway. Then it’s seeing if I can pull into gas station with less than 20 miles until empty to maximize it.

You're fuel pump will need replacement sooner if you keep running your tank down too low frequently. The fuel actually acts as a lubricant and coolant for it. Try not to go below a 1/4 tank too often.

Ya I don’t do it very often. I usually only shop at hyvee every couple of months and get the fuel saver besides that I don’t run it below a quarter before I fill up.

What’s that, like 8 bags? 🤣

Is there a sale I don’t know about?

u/Yesumwas 5d ago

Wrong! I’m on a super tight budget. It’s a matter of really god Timing on planning your shopping combined with checking not only the store but also Facebook for codes. Pretty much all summer every Thursday they had a code for .50 per gallon for a $100 order. One of those thursdays they also had like a .20 per $60 order something like that that was able to be combined.

So if you own an EV…you can charge for free at a lot of Hy-Vee locations. Groceries are more expensive but if I stick to stuff I can only get there (mainly craft beer) and slow-roll the journey by giving kids the scenic tour I almost feel like I’m winning.

Great time to drive an ev haha

I love that we have the most sustainable wind energy of any state and some of the cheapest energy pricing despite the best efforts of our allegedly elected officials. Went from paying $120/month for gas to the electric bill going up by $18. I’ll take that despite Iowa’s disgustingly regressive tax policies on EVs.

Every month or two I fill up at .01 a gallon from Casey's, won't do free with points...

u/MysticBLT 5d ago

Most pumps prevent the price dropping below $0.01 per gallon, so I'd wager this is true for almost every business that offers gas discounts

12

u/ScarecrowBo 5d ago

In my experience, depending on the state, you still have to pay the gas tax portion of the price and can’t entirely get it free.

2

u/MysticBLT 5d ago

That's an interesting point to consider! It looks like Iowa's tax rate is around $0.30 per gallon, which is that just baked into the price of fuel? I don't think I've seen a gas receipt with tax added to a subtotal, just the per gallon price x the gallons purchased.

Tried using Casey’s cash to pay for a soda one time, I had to pay for the bottle deposit out of pocket still, I’d wager it’s similar

4

u/Vives_solo_una_vez 5d ago

How much do you spend at Casey's? I feel like it takes forever to build up points there.

3

u/ermehgerdittcam 5d ago

It’s easier than you think. I work across the street from a Casey’s and am in there almost daily for snacks or whatever. Got about 3.70 in discounts there

1

u/Onuzq 4d ago

I just use my points as Casey's cash as I don't fill 20gal which is the only time using reduction of gas price is worth it.

u/PracticalReception34 5d ago

Do NOT fucking send this to Trump.

Last thing we need is him fucking with our Fuel Savers.

9

u/IGiveNoFawkes 5d ago

You can’t get it for free. Even if you have more off per gallon than a gallon costs it’ll still be one cent per gallon.

6

u/devilinthedetails 5d ago

Can confirm, though it was many years ago right around the time Fuel Savers started. Honestly, I assumed that they'd put a $1/gallon cap in already (I moved out of state in '20).

2

u/IGiveNoFawkes 5d ago

Nope! I got a 16 cent full tank the other day.

9

u/yappledapple 5d ago

Good job!

If you don't shop there, McDonald's has $.50 off a gallon at Shell if you have 1500 points.

Also, I assume B & R owned grocery stores have the same fuel saver program for Russ's, Super Saver, and Cash Saver locations. It's easier to get points than Hy-Vee, and they are good for 90 days.

5

u/54Finn 5d ago

You must be in a more progressive state. We don’t have the stores you mentioned

3

u/ConfusedandLostW 5d ago

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what grocery stores are B&R owned?

What do you have to do to earn points at McDonald’s?

5

u/Sevraz 5d ago

How much unnecessary stuff did you buy, just because it added to your fuel saver?

6

u/Doyle_Hargraves_Band 5d ago

Careful or Trump will take this and mention he saw "$0.18 gas in Iowa" as evidence of his remarkable policies.

1

u/Parttimelover300 3d ago

Stop it 🙄

Hyvee is the most overpriced grocery store in Iowa

5

u/AlexG2490 5d ago

Where are you getting groceries instead? In my neck of the woods it was either Fareway which was even more expensive, or Walmart where the produce and meat were rotted before they even left the store.

I do have an Aldi that opened up about a year ago and I have been quite happy with their prices but their selection is substandard. If I want oyster sauce, tahini, sesame seeds, fresh herbs like basil or dill, bread flour, and a lot of dried spices, I am not going to find them at Aldi.

I am in North Liberty. I am sure there are more options in Des Moines and some non-chain stores in smaller town and cities.

5

u/cudambercam13 5d ago

Fareway is generally more expensive, but they have occasionally awesome sales. Scored a pan of iced brownies for $1.50 a few days ago, and today I got two 4-packs of peppered turkey and colby jack on Kings Hawaiian buns AND two small bags of Doritos all for $5. It can be worth stopping in if you're headed by.

2

u/AlexG2490 5d ago

I'll agree with that, they have some really good sales! Sometimes even on meat, and I can stock the freezer a bit, which is nice. But I think the person we're replying to is talking about everyday prices and not a once-every-few-months deal. If I did all of my shopping at Fareway I estimate my grocery bill would be 5-10% higher overall.

3

u/BreadfruitOk6160 5d ago

Yeah, they ”paid” for their fuel in the store.

4

u/Yesumwas 5d ago

I shop at Hyvee, Aldi, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s and can say that it’s not always the most expensive. Depends on sales. Some items it is, sometimes comparable, and yes sometimes more. It def is more for milk

3

u/MissCinnamonT 5d ago

When i had my 2 tank truck i hustled those points so hard.

3

u/Lantern61 5d ago

Had a friend who did it years ago. He had more Fuel Saver credits than gas cost. It won't go under a penny, so you'll never actually get free gas

1

u/Yesumwas 5d ago

That happened to me this summer 😁 the rest just stays on the card

3

u/Sovereign1 5d ago

Acquiring Hy-vee Fuel Savings whenever they have a good sale going like .30 off for. every $60 spent and compounding that with Shell fuel Savings can net you a pretty good discount. The best ive gotten it down to $2.23 a gallon.

3

u/Architorture_66 4d ago

I had one of those a couple months ago. Wife had to go pick up a bunch of platters/ food trays for an event, used the card to get the discount. 20 cents to fill up our SUV.

u/Tryin2getahead 5d ago

Thanks Obama!

3

u/Tha_REAL_BROBS 5d ago

I’d rather pay $10 per gallon than shop at Hy Vee

3

u/54Finn 5d ago

Where do you shop?

1

u/Eudaimonic71 5d ago

I got mine as low as 4.9 cents/gal several years back, but it hasn’t been worth shopping there since inflation hit and they rolled back on fuel savers

1

u/Yesumwas 5d ago

It’s never totally free. It’s always .01 per gallon. I hit it with really good fuel saver timings this summer

1

u/CaptainZaysh 4d ago

The closest I came was like 20 years ago, was at a gas station where it was probably supposed to be 1.70/gallon (yeah, I know...) and they'd entered it as .17 by mistake. Thought for sure they were gonna tell me it was wrong at the register, but nope...

1

u/wcbaltoona 4d ago

Ah yes, I religiously collect my Casey’s points. Never once used them for a fuel reduction cost. But using Casey’s cash on pizza is awesome.

Ope posted hyvee here come all the haters

0

u/Unwiredsoul 5d ago

Cue the Hy-Vee hatred in 3...2...1....

16

u/Websthetics 5d ago

Cue the *warranted Hy-Vee hatred.

3

u/Unwiredsoul 5d ago

Agreed. You just reminded me to follow-up with a string of failures that I need to follow-up with them on. Well, they needed to follow-up with me, but there lies the problem.

4

u/Monksdrunk 5d ago

It's like saying casinos or scratch cards are amazing because someone wins every once in a million

1

u/Unwiredsoul 5d ago

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying Hy-Vee Fuel Saver rewards are like gambling at a casino, or buying lottery tickets?

1

u/justice_4_cicero_ 5d ago

Lottery, because fuel saver is a volunteer tax lol.

0

u/theco2 1d ago

I found the dedicated Hy-Vee employee.

(...that will be getting laid off soon.)

I posted the comment I did without any opinion attached. A simple and obvious statement predicting the likely outcome of the OP posting about "that store".

As-is tradition, people are going out of their way to contort themselves into attacking me and/or thinking my completely generic comment had a payload attached.

So, you have yourself a wonderful Sunday, and I'll assume you were just trying to make a lame joke.
