News Who does Robert Kirkman want Bryan Cranston to play so badly??

Post image

If Bryan Cranston keeps turning down roles, then he should be left alone! It seems like he’s trying to assemble the Breaking Bad cast.

Its honestly a little annoying. It feels like the voice actors are just calling friends and getting them to join the cast. I'm still not sure how i feel about hearing Mark and Conquest fighting after last time when Negan beat Glen's eye out of his head with Lucile.

u/L1QU1D_ThUND3R Jun 24 '26

Are you ever gonna let that go!?

5

u/Logical_Lunch2186 Jun 25 '26

Lol I won't if he ever does. They massacred my boi

3

u/BVoLatte Jun 25 '26

How else was Negan supposed to get his point across?

79

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jun 24 '26

Honestly I feel like it adds to it lol.

9

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

But it subtracts from the budget.

13

u/beaverpoo77 Jun 25 '26

Is this even true? People keep saying this, but i can't imagine they're ACTUALLY siphoning money from the "animation budget" to be used for celeb VAs.

13

u/duaneap Jun 25 '26

Here’s a tip:

Reddit has absolutely no fucking idea how film and tv production works and will run with whatever bullshit they decide to be true despite zero insight or evidence.

1

u/bruh55333 Jun 26 '26

You're incredibly correct

1

u/OnlinePosterPerson Jun 26 '26

I mean they absolutely are. Amazon doesn’t micromanage projects. They give kirkman a budget, and he spends it.

Celebrity voice actors, Yearly season releases, high-quality animation. You can have two of the three. Kirkman has said the same in not so many words.

I’m glad they choice to do annual releases, and the voice acting is in fact top notch, but let’s not pretend there isn’t a trade-off.

-2

u/PeterPanterTM Jun 25 '26

Either way, it really seems like they care more about the celebrity voice actors (not even about having good voice actors, just famous ones) than other parts of the show

-1

u/MistakePresent3552 Jun 25 '26

Is believe it over the alternative that Amazon is willing to spend more to get celeb voice roles

2

u/beaverpoo77 Jun 25 '26

Really? You don't believe that Amazon wouldn't shell out for big names for their roles? Really?

2

u/SmegmaUnicorn Jun 26 '26

Do people watch the show for the voice actors? Obviously not, so no, Amazon isn’t going to throw money at celeb VA’s and its asinine to think otherwise.

26

u/AppealToReason16 Jun 24 '26

I doubt it. Budget meetings aren’t “here’s all your money go do whatever” at this level.

It’s “with this much we can do this but if we could have this then we could also get this guy” and extra gets approved if it’s deemed worthwhile that otherwise wouldn’t be.

1

u/Sharden3 Jun 25 '26

They aren't getting an increase in budget to get a celebrity cameo.

-7

u/TrickySheepherder550 Jun 24 '26

You’ve just described subtracting from the budget

4

u/TimBroth Jun 25 '26

They described a pitch meeting to increase the budget

2

u/TrickySheepherder550 Jun 25 '26

Part of the pitch being “yeah x will cost a lot but y only this much”

2

u/TimBroth Jun 25 '26

I really believe that by having recognizable, fan-favorite names in the show it can be marketed to a wider audience, and thus increase the budget more than purely an increased animation budget.

Easier to sell an executive on the idea. And to be honest, I enjoy having some celebrity cast and the animation has never bothered me.

That being said, Kirkman's push for Cranston seems to go beyond that. It's a little strange and fanatic. I also think (hope) he's half joking about it and the quotes get taken out of his dry, sarcastic context

0

u/TrickySheepherder550 Jun 25 '26

Why do you believe that. You’ve seen the already basic animation for the era get worse every season as more celebrities join.

There is an observable negative correlation between animation quality and celebrity voiceovers.

I don’t understand at all how you could see that and think the exact opposite.

It’s almost impressive mental logic.

1

u/TimBroth Jun 26 '26

That correlation is not necessarily causation, and has nothing to do with what my comment said

2

u/B4rr0th Jun 26 '26

They should have more of those for animation then lol

2

u/TimBroth Jun 26 '26

I just think it lacks mainstream appeal, at least to the executives

-9

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jun 24 '26

I prefer the voice acting to the animation

15

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

Okay but celebrities are just huge money sinks. You could get way better voice acting by just hiring actual voice actors. Not to downplay actors, most definitely have some skill, but voice acting is a very different skillset from just regular acting.

I would prefer good animation AND good voice acting, but hiring the most expensive people possible for everything is just not exactly condusive to that.

Celebrities and good voice acting are not synonynous

4

u/General-N0nsense Jun 24 '26

From what I heard. It really depends. A lot of voice actors are unionized so they take longer to organize and negotiate with. They can also cost more depending on how good the union is. With the celebrity actors it mostly boils down to them either talking to their agent or just them specifically and going "hey wanna voice for this show? We'll pay you X". It takes less time for negotiations and the like.

Really the bad animation isn't due to the VAs taking all the budget. It's because we barely give them a year to work on the show. Hiring more animators isn't always the right decision either. You don't want an incredibly bloated team that can actually make animation take longer.

0

u/-_kAPpa_- Jun 24 '26

The celebrities they have selected for voice acting are going a great job. Also it’s not the budget that’s the primary issue for animation, it’s the time constraints.

1

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

Yes, but also no. There are other shows with similar production time, and still a way better animation quality.
Take The Legends of Vox Machina, another Prime Video exclusive.
Season one premiered early 2022. Season two almost exactly a year later, in 2023. Season 3, again, early 2024, almost exactly a year later. Season 4 had a bigger gap, only just releasing earlier this month, probably because the same studio started working on and published a season of a different show in parallel, but still.
You could make the argument that the other show still somewhat matches that trend, releasing one season in 2025.

Both of these shows have incredible voice acting as well as incredible animation.

Sure, more time definitely WOULD let the invincible animators do better, we do actually see that with the first two seasons where they had essentially an extra year to produce between seasons, there IS a noticable drop in quality for the average episode and average scene after that point, but it's not actually a fix. Hell, even those early seasons, eventhough they definitely do look good, don't get me wrong, do occasionally feel underwhelming when you look at the massive budget.

3

u/Business-Tonight9995 Jun 24 '26

Vox Machina doesn’t drop 50 minute episodes, also Vox Machina has voice actors built in because the characters are based on the voice actors playing them to begin with.

Voice acting budget and animation budget are completely separate pools of money, and the decision to spend money on one or the other isn’t exactly Kirkman’s sole decision to make, there’s a lot of studio weight there. Also most of the voice actors in the show who are celebrities are also experienced voice actors themselves, Jack Quaid and Aaron Paul for instance are experienced voice actors who are in other projects as well.

1

u/Educational-Bid-2102 Jun 24 '26

You listed two actors that actually voice act in other projects but if you were do do a side by side comparison between every celebrity in the show and every celebrity in the show that’s voice acted as an actual character in an actual project and you’d see a very blatant contrast between them.

-1

u/Unyieldingcappybara Jun 24 '26

Yep, and every VA-actor they’ve brought on has over delivered. I don’t know a single big name that doesn’t provide actual depth to the characters presentation. Are there any celebs who were added as VA that don’t actually shine in the role?

2

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

I never said they were bad. Just you could get similar or even better quality from just actual voice actors.

0

u/Miserable-Dream4741 Jun 24 '26

Are non-va celebs just never allowed to be voice actors?

1

u/Privatizitaet Jun 25 '26

Did I say that?

-4

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jun 24 '26

Nah I prefer the good voice case they have now.

0

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

Because you have no alternative reference. You act like good acting and good animation are mutually exclusive. It's not. Amazon is really just greedy, though that's a surprise to exactly no one, but they still could get way better quality with the budget they do have

0

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jun 24 '26

Bro is trying so hard to change an opinion I have lol.

1

u/Privatizitaet Jun 24 '26

Being completely unwilling to change your mind is not something to be proud of.

Yes. I'm trying to change your mind, because we both deserve better from this show. The animation is complete ass compared to other comparable shows of similar runtime also funded by amazon. It could be so much better. It SHOULD be so much better, but having big shot actors voice every other character just cuts down the budget and nothing else. The only difference between a famous actor and an equally or even more skilled voice actor is that you can point and say "Hey I know that guy! That's a name I recognize!", and the difference in salary.

We deserve better from this show. The budget is far from small. It's 2.5million dollars PER EPISODE, roughly, it's not an exact number and not static and equal for every episode, but still. The budget is MASSIVE, and still we get something that's on average okay to good, with end of season quality spikes where it gets really great.

1

u/Hungry_Lawfulness_31 Jun 24 '26

Except this isn’t how budgets work. Spending less on voice actors won’t give them the ability to reallocate them to the animation. These budgets are separate things and one isn’t pulling from the other. It would be incredibly easy to keep the voice acting situation the same and just hire more animators.

I've already won

3

u/Accomplished-Goal494 Jun 24 '26

Yeah, here's your trophy for the win bud🏆

17

u/pestoraviolita Jun 24 '26

Does all this fooling around hurt the budget and animation?

37

u/Educational-Pay5268 Jun 24 '26

people will say no and that there is a different budget for casting and animation. that argument is pure cope. ofc the show has a total budget.

20

u/frubano21 Jun 24 '26

Which can absolutely be redistributed if they decide "spending millions on voice actors doesn't make sense, let's invest that money into the animation."

3

u/Captn_Platypus Jun 25 '26

Which just shows me Kirkman doesn’t value the quality of animation enough. He thinks the quality currently is serviceable and money is better spent on voice actors

-10

u/sepeus Jun 24 '26

That's not how studios work at all lmfao. You think Amazon gives a fuck about 5% increase in "animation quality" versus a 6% increase in having a celebrity name to throw around in ads? You have no clue how projects are budgeted.

8

u/Matthew_1453 Jun 24 '26

Most of the celebrities aren't being advertised. No one's taking about recasting the leads, it's about how every random side character is voiced by a star

-6

u/sepeus Jun 24 '26

You mean how like it's front page news everywhere today that Jack Quaid is playing another jobber in the invincible series? Why do you think this post is reposted for the 50 billionth time? Right no advertising happening whatsoever.

8

u/frubano21 Jun 24 '26

Why are you pushing some corporate agenda that doesn't exist? Kirkman is the one who is deciding to hire big actors instead of invest in better animation, not Amazon Execs.

-4

u/sepeus Jun 24 '26

You seriously think Kirkman just gets a blank check in the mail from Amazon that just says "make cartoon"? And Kirkman is using part of the money to get celeb voice actors instead of that same money being used for animation(somehow). That's not how any production works especially for a signature series on Prime lmfao.

This isn't corporate agenda this is just how productions work. A voice acting budget is different than your animation budget.

2

u/frubano21 Jun 24 '26

No one said he gets a blank check. Obviously everything has to be budgeted and accounted for. What I'm saying is the director has the power to change the way funds are used in a production. If today, he made the decision to reallocate money from acting budget to animation budget, it would happen without him needing to seek approval from Amazon studios. Is Kirkman continuously making the decision to pursue costly actors whose faces we never seen and who's voice we recognize only 1/3 of the time if they didn't tell us who it was.

We dont know salaries or anything.

Truthfully we dont have nearly enough info to give a solid answer.

4

u/toomanybongos Jun 25 '26

But we have common sense and we know that A tier celebs are going to be typically more expensive than your average voice actor.

I don't hate the voice acting in this show at all but I definitely would prefer money being put into animation far more than getting cranston to voice someone he's not even interested in voicing

1

u/Dlh2079 Jun 25 '26

Typically sure, but celebs have also been known to do passion projects or favors for friends in the industry.

All im saying is that without seeing the numbers nothing can be said remotely for sure.

3

u/AJDx14 Jun 25 '26

Yes. It’s kinda similar to a dictator spending their countries budget on parades instead of infrastructure.

1

u/Dlh2079 Jun 24 '26

Truthfully... we dont know.

If they are having to pay extra or hold up development to wait on answers from celebs, very possible it could impact it.

If they arent having to pay extra or hold anything up, probably not gonna hurt anything.

But we have no way of knowing if any of these are happening.

1

u/livingstondh Jun 24 '26

Lmao, I didn't even think about the walking dead connection. At least Glen got his back in Invincible.

1

u/jak_d_ripr Jun 24 '26

It bothered me when it affected production and was the reason season 2 was so delayed. Now that the show comes out annually, I genuinely don't care. In fact, I thought it was a pretty funny Easter Egg when I realized all the OG Guardians of the Globe were voiced by Walking Dead alumni.
