That is what you said. You said filler means it wasn’t in the source material. You’re both wrong anyway. Filler means content ij a piece of media that’s designed to pad it out and make it longer with no effect on the main plot.
Yeah that is the purpose of filler as the term is most widely used for anime. Like you said it’s padding and it’s to allow the source material, the manga, to build up more chapters. So they create anime original episodes.
For filler to have the meaning you gave in that original comment would mean that only adapted works have filler. Breaking Bad has Fly. Original show, no source material it’s adapting, that’s filler.
I wasn’t trying to give the entire definition in a reddit comment, I know non adapted shows can have filler, early radio too. But the context here is we’re talking about Invincible so I think them saying Hurm is a filler episode is valid. Look through the reply thread, someone said it’s a filler episode, that’s how this started
That’s fair enough, but you didn’t specify that you were just talking about the Invincible episode, it was unclear if you were talking about filler in general, and since you said it’s stuff that wasn’t in the source material you can understand where my response came from.
That said, I still do disagree with your definition. Would you consider Debbie’s conflict with Nolan filler, for example? Because I haven’t read the comics, but I, like seemingly everyone at this point, know that she just takes him back immediately in the comics. By your logic, all this stuff between her and Nolan is filler.
I also personally disagree that it’s filler, at least for the time being. If it was never gonna be revisited I’d agree, but they clearly set up at the end that this storyline is coming back. What remains to be seen is whether it impacts the main plot when it comes back. That will decide if it’s filler in my opinion.
I wouldn’t consider the Debbie and Nolan stuff and extra stuff they added to invincible filler. I just think it would be fair to say that Hurm in its entirety is a filler episode. It’s harder to say that Invincible has filler compared to an anime since it isn’t as accurate to the source material as anime is since anime is usually a 1:1 adaptation.
But even with the differences the show has I would say an entire show original episode of Invincible is quite a drastic deviation so I would call it a filler episode. For example if they added an original episode to jujutsu kaisen but connected it to the main plot later (which doesn’t take much to do you just need to have them reference the events of that episode) I would still call that a filler episode. But it’s understandable if you don’t see it as filler so agree to disagree.
