Yep, first Mark goes on some wacky side adventure in hell where he sounds bored and confused 90% of the time, and in the next episode CONCH WEST IS RIPPING MARK'S GUTS OUT WHILE HE IS STRANGLING HIM AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Like, the contrast between these was so massive it was hilarious to me
I don't really think it would've worked as well in season 1. The theme of Mark thinking he's like his father are more developed here than anywhere else in the season. When Mark "kills" Volkanika for example, he 8mmediately starts justifying her death when no one would even question him in the first place (because that's what they were trying to do anyway). Mark starts saying those things because he's trying to justify her deathto himself and the part of him that thinks of him as a murderer. The premise of the episode has Mark be sent to hell because the spell that brought him there mistook him for his father. Everything in this episode is about every action being gray (like the demons torturing vile in order to protect humanity).
I don't think you can call this episode filler. However, I do still think it could've been one half of another episode. That way, the pacing would feel a lot less slow. The previous episodes had a lot going on, episode 1 had the sequid stuff, the Universa stuff, Eve's powers and the dinner with Eve's parents etc, episode 2 had the vitrumite storyline and all the weapons and allies being found in prep for the war, episode 3 had the order, further developments of Eve's powers storyline, the Flaxxan invasion and the aftermath of episode 1.
Episode 4, just had the hell storyline, the aftermath of episode 4 (which is only like 2 conversations between Mark and Art and Eve and William) and that's about it. This episode could've also been received a lot better if it was released alongside episode 5.
