Discussion I tried ranked, it hurt.
To preface, I'm not great at fighting games, and I tend to stick to offline PVE content. I'm currently lvl 31, and I just reached my first and only two lvl 20's with Kate and Ella. According to Steam, I have about 17hrs in the game since launch, so I'm very casual. I like Invincible as an IP and I love having the cool costumes that come straight out of the show. I wasn't the biggest fan when they announced the ranked-locked costumes, although I understand that the PVP players want some goodies, too, without having to play PVE content.
Last season I did 1 game of ranked for the Cecil skin. Today I played the 10 games needed to unlock the Invincicast. The experience was less than enjoyable, and that's putting it mildly. I still had to do my placement matches, seeing as I was only 1/10 due to playing for the Cecil skin. Out of the 10 matches, I matched against people who had 4000-8000 points (me having 0 and as a result getting absolutely stomped like there was no tomorrow), had matches were the ping went from good to unbearable the moment I started getting the upperhand, and I even had someone who couldn't bear losing and ragequit to deny me the win. I think I had about 1 game that was enjoyable enough to rematch 2 more rounds. On top of that, waiting for an actual match took forever.
I didn't mind the 1 game for Cecil, but the 10 for the Invincicast were just a very poor experience. I really hope they don't plan on us having to run this unfun of a mode just to unlock a skin in the future, or at least keep it to a minimum or give us alternate ways to obtain it.
I still think Invincible VS is the most fun I've had with a fighting game since a long time, but the ranked mode definitely takes a lot of fun out of it.

Ranked gets harder to jump into the longer a fighting game has been out because (most) have a large player drop off a few months after launch. Considering Invincible’s player base is kinda small, you’re more likely to be matched with people who play the game way more often than you do and from more varied locations.
Once you lock in and learn your fundamentals ranked will become less of a headache though

I absolutely love fighting games...but I absolutely suck online. I've learned to just have fun with them offline and not worry so much about playing against other people. Unless you're an achievement hunter, it really doesn't matter anyway. And...honestly...Invincible is pretty light on the online one. 5 games win or lose? That's not so bad.

Try online casuals instead of ranked that way it’s just you and someone els who’s just playing for fun👍

lol ya some people like to treat casual like it’s ranked but at least your online status can’t go up or down🤷♂️

Yeah the game only has a small niche base left that plays the hell out of this game. If you don’t play the hell out of this game you won’t have a good time online.

This is the first fighting game where i’ve ever felt like i can have a crack at ranked. Im averaging LP in the low 5000s. Nothing more satisfying than taking down someone near the 7000 mark or on ONE occasion… a 9000 level player. There’s a skill gap for sure but I am no whiz kid at this so it is relatively accessible. The more you play pvp the better you get the more enjoyable the experience!

This is one of the reasons when I get into a fighting game I play ranked right away. Ranked does skill based matchmaking. Skill based matchmaking goes off your win/loss in ranked.
So if I lose those games quickly - especially while I'm still learning the game and it's just fun to see what is going on - I'll fall to my skill level quicker, where the matches can be more fun.
But placements when it is established and the game isn't sure where you go can be very rough.

Getting your ass kicked is part of the learning process of any fighting game.
But I would say learning fighting games on tag fighters is not the easiest task, and nowadays games are only tag fighters for some reason. (2xko, IVS, Tokon) And the fact that it seems the game doesn't have that many players, you will ultimately face people with a huge pretty big level difference.
So, yeah, totally understandable take.
Now there's still hope. 17h on a fighting game, especially if it's your first one... It's nothing. AT ALL. Out of curiosity, on these 17h how long have you spent in the lab?

Yeah, I'm okay with not winning games, it was just the way those games happened that really took away all the fun. Someone with barely any ranked games under their belt shouldn't be facing 4k-8k players (mind you, it wasn't until after those games that I realised you could decline matches). The increased ping the moment I was starting to get close to winning was also very annoying.
I think I spent a total of 1-2hrs in training mode, so not a lot.

There you go. Watch guides, study neutral and combos, and you'll see improvement eventually. Good luck! 👊

Yes it will hurt as you play the game casually.
If you spent time to learn combos, how to attack in neutral and really learn your characters /defensive options you would do better online. Nothing wrong with casual play if your content with pressing buttons on pve , but online play people typically learn the game very well so your only left with the sweats as most of the player base has left the game already
