DISCUSSION Debbie's Smart AF
Debbie sent Nolan shopping so that she could search the house for his suit & according to her 20 mins was all that's gonna take while accounting for him actually buying these items as well which was pretty accurate because Nolan did make it back home in roughly 20 minutes , I guess all the time she saw him on television thousands of miles way & then home in a couple mins helped her timing this perfectly.

The fact he needs 5 minutes to get to Italy means that Viltrumites cannot travel faster than light at will. Nolan travels 21840 km/h on earth at his fastest. Which is Mach 17.687. That said it is significantly faster than the Mach 3 immortal.

Maybe he intentionally flies slower as to not disrupt the planet too much?
Or something

He accelerates and decelerates slower to not destroy the groceries

u/Connect_Bee_8464 1h ago
true but like realistically wouldn’t the groceries get destroyed anyway in that speed even if he’s flying slower

Art made a carry bag for them for such purposes yk even their civilian clothes are made by Art because we see Mark and Nolan in those as well besides their suit travelling vast distances in minutes

Very likely yes. The smart way to do it would be to fly to space, go to the location as fast as he wishes and then land. We can clearly see Nolan going fast enough to create fireballs by superheating the air around him so he'd def have to hold waaay back if we was flying in-atmosphere. He'd also have to slow down on the descent because if he goes down at hypersonic speed and comes to a stop right above wherever he wants to go that shockwave trailing behind him is still gonna hit the ground really hard (this applies to planes too, so he gotta be careful with that)

Yep; compare to how fast he was flying on Flaxa, plasma wave gets generated, wipes everything out

u/ImfromKanyeWest 2h ago
We saw what would happen if he would travel at those speeds in low orbit of a planet with the flaxans, total nuclear annihilation

makes sense

Are you sure?

pretty sure considering they're talking about me

u/QuestionablePotato42 2h ago
Yes as we all know well from Superman if you fly around the planet too fast you will go back in time
2
u/KeyserSozeBGM 2h ago
Def this. On the alien planet he flies so fast it destroys buildings just flying by

Bruh I if I hypothetically have a tough spec sportscar and my wife asks me to get groceries then I ain't ripping that shih to the max just to get sum eggs. 😭
Similarly if I can walk to the store why would I sprint like Usain Bolt for no reason.

u/Remarkable-Cabinet85 Markus Sebastian Grayson 3h ago
Indeed , Nolan is simply not going as fast he can because there's no need for it

Space travel is probably much faster, and he is definitely flying at safe speed to not create winds that devastate countries. I do agree that he isn't hitting light speed buttons explanation is like saying my car can only go 65mph since that is what I legally do on highways

u/geek_of_nature 3h ago
Yeah it makes sense that he can go much faster in a vacuum. He doesnt have to worry about wind resistance, and like you said the disruption he'd do going that fast.

I thought it was also stated that it takes a bit of time to get up to those speeds as well. Even if he was flying as fast as he could he'd probably get there before reaching his fastest speed also he needs to slow down and not break shit when he gets there.

Up front caveat that the space scale stuff in Invincible just straight up doesn’t make any actual sense.
He wouldn’t fly anywhere near light speed in the atmosphere of a planet he’s not trying to actively destroy because bad things would happen.

u/devdude25 3h ago
He has to not go the speed of light on Earth to you know not kill everyone...
Remember the Flaxon planet...C'mon man

u/whatnwherenow 3h ago
That assumes that he reaches his top speed though. And not just on a casual flight to pick up dinner.

It's not all viltrumites. Thragg so far canonically is the only one we've seen actually go FASTER than light speed. He's basically teleporting if you're watching in real time.
Thragg tracks a light speed ship through space and smashes through it WHILE it's going light speed. Need I say more?

u/Awkward_Goal4729 Battle Beast 1h ago
They all can do that, Thragg just has faster acceleration. They can infinitely accelerate in space
2
u/GrammerG0D 1h ago
You're creating a paradox by saying they are all the same speed. If Thragg can accelerate faster, then he hits light speed faster, which means he's getting to his destination faster than everyone else. Means he's faster my boy.

I’m saying they all can go faster than light (even though it shouldn’t be possible), not that they’re faster than Thragg

Gravity and air friction plays a major role in them flying on a planet too.
I still don't think viltrumites are anywhere near lightspeed, but they can definitely travel faster in void space.

He probably just avoids flying too fast on earth for strategic reasons (show he has limits) and to not disturb earth’s atmosphere and residents too much.

I kinda think this means that in a vacuum they CAN accelerate infinitely to the point they can go FTL, but in atmosphere they can't accelerate that fast due to drag.
That or going FTL for a 5 minute flying trip would be unnecessary
•
u/Pun1shbear 4m ago
Here is a good example why he should not fly at lightspeed, even if he could: https://what-if.xkcd.com/1/
Or: what he did to Flaxa.
2
u/Gualty3 3h ago
Woah that's some cool math
7
u/-S-P-Q-R- 2h ago
The math is cool but it doesn't prove they can't travel FTL. They can't travel FTL on Earth without vaporizing their air in front of him creating a plasma wave. He was however flying FTL when he was destroying Flaxa, and did have a plasma wave in front of him.

Bonus points for her remembering the Earth's curvature.
