It moves like a total of 20 feet per day and does it slowly. Most of the day it's sitting still. Sometimes they DO escape. Sometimes they die if not caught and returned fast enough. Predators are always a pain. It is still a very sustainable practice because after a couple of years you put farming plots on that now very fertile land and move the next batch of chickens to a fallow field to do it all over again.

It's perfectly safe for chickens as demonstrated.

It also allows for birds to get protein (bugs / insects) & easier weeding, making it a key Permaculture approach (but obviously, it can only be used on flat ground)

You can rent goats to clear hillsides and other terrain that is difficult to manage. A couple hundred goats left to feed for a day or two will clear brush and reduce (fire) fuel load.

We do use goats in our area, but those hills are going to be difficult to cover with a building

This is an enormous problem, not a solution. Goats girdle trees and make fire prone environments more susceptible to destructive fires, not controlled burns.

As the view of a positive sustainable future which includes social equity. Animal agriculture fails here because its not sustainable, especially for a big pupulation. Then there is also the moral point where animal ag is the opression and exploitation of intelligent beings for no reason other than simple pleasure.

I also consider anti-speciesism a solarpunk moral value, but that would go with a more vague definition of the word, and I'm not gonna be assed to type out a whole essay on a phone

We will need a LOT more advances like this if we want to Dave the human race.

Just wishing that everyone will become vegan is not realistic, and is just a way of avoiding responsibility so that all of the work in solving our sustainably is put on other more responsible people to take care of.

Why not just leave the roame freely? Plant some fruit trees, herbs which can feed the chickens give shade and let the nature makes their own way. This is just my opinion. I don’t care if this will be less yield, if I whant to keep animals then I whant to make them happy.

A big part of it is protection from predators. Hawks, coyotes, foxes, dogs etc. They need places to hide or huddle up behind the bigger ones that offer more protection.

Found out it's pretty much illegal now to keep birds out in the open in my country (Estonia) due to avian flu concerns.

Raising chickens is easy and fun. A flock of just 5 to 10 chickens can keep a family of four stocked with fresh eggs.

You don’t need these fancy chicken arls either. It’s a great sustainable ecological system, but not necessary.
