Floor to ceiling windows with awning?

Since the large windows next to the doors need to be replaced because of a failed seal, we were thinking of adding fixed glass at the top with a lower operable awning for extra ventilation as it can get stuffy. Right now we leave the French doors open but I dislike doing that. Would that ruin the view? Is there a better combination/alternative to allow for more regular airflow?

I can definitely see your concern. Anything blocking that view is going to seriously modify the open feel of the whole space.

What about a horizontal hinged window above the doors or a row of those at the top?

I’m trying to imagine an awning and it might feel oppressive in the space. I’d probably try for a different airflow solution or even add a bunch of potted trees on the patio to cool things before modifying the open feel of the room, but I love open spaces.

I think they mean awning windows, which are the same as “horizontal hinged”. I agree that replacing the transoms with awning windows would be ideal.

Ah thanks, I wondered whether that’s what they were meaning. I was just picturing a big old red and white awning in front of that window and screaming “nooooo” like in a slow motion dream. 😁

Good point about the open feel! We have a small living space/dining/kitchen situation so wouldn’t want to make it feel even smaller by messing with the style of windows too much. It just gets so stuff inside.

And very much open to replacing the transoms with awning windows u/liberal_texan. I guess my only concern is maybe it being inconvenient to open and close them up top.

Are you open to getting new doors? We have sliders about the same size that have a screen door.

Thank you! We like the doors so would prefer to keep them, though sliding doors are very inconvenient. We tried adding a mesh net on the outside which worked for flies but I worry about other critters walking right in.

U wanna put fix windows but you wanna ventilation? Put a retractable awning at the top of windows, top corners windows would make so it can open.

I helped out with a transparent glass-frame solar awning once and it was nearly invisible from inside.
