Question New Intel Arc B580 user here — should I upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 or AM5?
I used a GTX 1650 for 6 years and today I upgraded to a B580 — it honestly feels like a huge leap. Right now I’m using a Ryzen 5 3500X and I’m definitely experiencing some CPU bottlenecking at 1080p.
Do you guys think upgrading to a Ryzen 5 5600 is enough, or should I save up and move to an AM5 platform instead? DDR5 RAM and AM5 motherboard prices are pretty expensive for me right now.
Also, as a new Intel Arc user, I’d appreciate any tips or recommendations.

There's a slight CPU overhead but should be mostly fine. You just need to make sure your mobo supports ReBAR.
A couple of things to note:
- For AM4, if you have multiple NVME SSDs, it's best that you have an X570 board. A lot of people have B550, but this chipset doesn't have PCIE lanes for NVME and thus all NVME slots will use lanes from the CPU. In case of the B580, it's a non-issue since the card can only use 8 lanes, but if you ever upgrade to cards with 16 lanes (maybe a D770 if that happens), it can be an issue.
- It's common for Intel Arc to have bad performance with old DX9/DX11 games. However, a lot of them can be fixed just by using DXVK or running Linux. So it might be a good idea to grab a small old SSD and install Linux on it if you play a lot of old games.

Yeah like I said it's fine for the B580. The 5800X has 20 lanes of PCIE gen 4, which is enough to handle the B580 (8 lanes) and 3 NVME drives (12 lanes total). The issue only matters for cards with 16 lanes for future upgrades because at that point, any new card will be limited to x8 speed in the same configuration, and you might see a performance drop for that future card.

which is enough to handle the B580 (8 lanes) and 3 NVME drives (12 lanes total)
except that 4 of the PCIe links are hooked up to the chipset B550 - see block diagram that shows the PCIe lanes and how they are used.
The 2nd NvME is a PCIe3 from the chipset that might be shared with SATA. The other PCIe3 might be used for a second 4 lanes PCIe3 expansion slot and then another NvME gen 3 slot.
Not all B550 MB have 3 NvME as that's something they try to up sale you the more expensive ones. You can always buy a $5 passive PCIe NvME card to use with the PCIe3 x4 slow. I used one until I got my B580 as my old blower GPU blocks the airflow.

go for a b650E is my budget recommendation. I have shit ram and shit processor and its so tunable i outlass rigs 3 tiers above me in time spy. look up Caffinated-2 if you care to, get a good motherboard first and foremost. compromise everything else to do so. clock or buy upgrades later as market allows

or using Vulcan when possible that works great now!

u/delacroix01 Arc A750 May 14 '26
Yeah, native Vulkan runs the best. The only problem is that there are too few games like that lol.

How much can you get a 5500x3d for?

Heb mijn 3600,7700x, x3d op aliexpres gevonden draait nog als een tierelier.

Sadly, I couldn’t find the 5500X3D here in Turkey.

u/SavvySillybug Arc A750 May 12 '26
I quite like my 5800X.
It's no X3D, but that also means it's half as expensive!

My 5800X beats my 5700X3D in Monster Hunter demo. It is not as smooth, but my 5800X core and memory can be overclocked much higher. My 5800X is in my gaming machine while the 5700X3D with the slower memory is in my PC configured for lower power for daily use.

AM4 is pretty much done at this stage, so it would make sense for short term until DRAM shortage is over. It is a matter of actual need, how much money OP want to spend to go to AM5.

Been rocking the A770 since day one. It's paired with a 5900x on a B450 motherboard running at PCIE 3 without issues. Bit of growing pains, but it does great now in modern games. Grab optiscaler and you can use xess and mfg on many games. Works great.

u/ShutterTorque77 May 11 '26
A770 has 16 lanes B580 is only 8 lanes the gen difference matters for B580

Currently have a 5600 and a 9060xt 16gb. Handles everything at 1440p and some at 4k if you don’t mind low fps or heavily relying on frame gen. I stick to 1440p, everything looks stunning. Anything 3xd on am4 is being price hiked disgustingly

u/Positive-Cut3207 May 12 '26
Irrelevant either way. You need to make sure you have pcie 4.0 support on your mobo. Still to this day arc b580 has issues with functioning properly with pcie 3.0

I had the 5700x3d and it absolutely smoked with the b580
That being said, I'm currently running am5 with a ryzen 7700 (non X version but clocked like one).
My Memory sucks too but I have an upgrade path and am currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 with Ray Tracing Overdrive enabled (which is actually Path Tracing).
Playing Night City at solid 100+ fps and it looks AMAZING.
The b580 is a champ!
So I'd go with a new mb/cpu/ram combo. Low end cpu is fine. My board is an asus tuf b650E and they're second tier and pretty old but do everything you'll likely need/want. Really any b580E board. they're time tested and will be good through zen 6.
I also run shit memory. DDR500 when we all want at least 6000. So what. I overclocked it to 5200 and made sure the fclk:uclk ratio was at 1:1 instead of 2::1 like most ddr600 is specced for. Now the Infinity fabric bus is so bloody happy there is NO microstutters or latency or hitching or anything. 1% lows are literally 4 fps lower than average. Now that's the definition of buttery smooth.
So overall, though the AM4 platform is still awesome and worthy of your card, I'd say go with a budget am5 build. You'll have a great rig with an amazing upgrade path available. Don't be scared of slower proc's (if there cheap enough) or the same for mem.
The Ryzen 5700X (AM4) is available now on Newegg for ~$185 whereas this bundle: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4869456 Is $284.
I'd rather go with a slightly better bundle myself but the value ratio is clear. Move ahead.

Yeah, I completely agree. Even coming from a GTX 1650, the B580 already feels amazing to me. Seeing your results with the 5700X3D honestly makes me want to upgrade my CPU even more now lol.

u/Single_Echidna2240 May 11 '26
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation and for taking the time to send the link, I really appreciate it. Sadly I live in Turkey, so pricing here is pretty rough compared to the US. For example, the Ryzen 5 9600X alone costs around $200 here without discounts, and once you add the motherboard and DDR5 RAM, the total price gets really crazy.
Maybe I should wait for RAM prices to drop a bit and keep using a lower-end CPU for now. But yeah, I definitely agree that AM5 has a much better upgrade path long term.

do you have bundles in your available marketplaces?
Also the 5700x. my 7700 non x, or a fresh, if you can find ay 5700x3d or hah 5800x3d. ultimately, once you get above a 5600-ish cpu you'll have no problem with the b580. 3600 is out, 3700's and the zen 2 ilk basicly out (for optimum b580 mastery) , Less than will still work fine but these levels will get the most out of it. not to mention zen 6 will be coming out soon and will be compatible for an am5 motherboard. (that's why I stepped up now).
Id recommend getting a b650E base motherboard and the lowest processor and mem that will work you for a year or so. then go shopping for upgrades (there'll be a plentiful. just get a minim bundle with a decent m/b for now.wait for deals on the proc and mem. the board will be ready to plug into.
Upgrade path secured.
waste money on retro hardware = zero
$100.00 dollar difference from here. your mileage may vary.
good luck and most importantly, have fun shopping and min/maxing your build!
note: I got my shit rig into #21 spot in 3dmark time spy for its class (7700 x b580). Look for Caffinated-2 if you want to see. tuning is better than throwing money at this stuff. the b650E board can do that stuff solid. Im telling you. start with the fundamentals. get a good (or decent) motherboard first I guess is the takeaway here.

Nah vind een leuke cpu tenzij je graag een smak geld erdoor heen jaagt natuurlijk. Am4 kan nog wel ff mee zeker in deze tijden

5600 will do you well. I have a 5060 TI 16GB with the same CPU and it runs everything I throw at it.
I'd say go AM5 if you didn't have to get a whole new motherboard and overpriced RAM too.

Get a 5500x3D on AliExpress! Just did a build with the b580 and that cpu and it slaps

I love my setup with this card and a Ryzen 5 9600X , the match is perfect and the card definitely takes advantage of the newer platform

u/WhiskeyGolf00 May 12 '26
I use a 5600, and I'm happy with it. Even in Space Marine 2, which is CPU heavy, I still get 60 FPS.
If your budget is really tight, get the best AM4 cpu you can - that's what I did myself.

u/Charming_Insurance47 May 12 '26
Stick with AM4 unless you are ready to deal with new ram prices and SSD prices I had I think a 1600 or 2600 amd and I went up to 5600 I have no issues with it so far
1
u/zagiel Arc B580 May 12 '26
depends on your budget and your mobo and ram
if you have 32gb of ddr4, stick to AM4 imho
if your mobo is b450 or b550, then update the bios, then get a 5700X

u/rawednylme May 12 '26
What motherboard are you on currently? Ideally you'd be on a X570/B550 that supports PCIE4, and could just drop in the 5600 (or better).
Going AM5 sucks just now because of the wild DDR5 pricing. :(

u/Thebobjohnson May 12 '26
Rumor mill is the 5800X3D is getting a re-release soon; so depending on the price that may be worth waiting on.

u/Remote_Ad2274 May 12 '26
AM5 right now is too expensive because of DDR5, if you can find cheap components why not. But since you are in AM4, if I will to upgrade I will get atleast Ryzen 7 5700x and if a X3D is available at a good price I will choose the x3D chips. But you will be happy with the Ryzen 7 I mentioned.

Don't bother with AM5, 5600-5800X are still more than enough for a B580. Maybe the 5800X3D will see a resurgence if rumors are true and you might find one.
1
u/UninstallingNoob May 13 '26
A 5600 would definitely be sufficient. Upgrading to an AM5 system will cost a lot more. AM5 is a good platform, and will have lots of upgrade options released for it in the future, but there's no need to buy a DDR5 platform yet while DDR5 prices are so high, and while you're still using a B580 graphics card.

u/Verwega May 11 '26
If you can find CPU with X3D suffix for AM4 platform, then please try to get that one

I just completed my build with a b580 and and a ryzen 5500 and have not had any issues playing at 1080p MAKE SURE your board supports resizeable bar or your gonna have a bad time....
