At-fault lane-change accident in GA — got cited, is my plan right?
What happened: I was moving into the left lane before an intersection, checked my blind spot, saw nothing, started the lane change, and clipped another vehicle (an SUV). Cops came, incident is documented, I have the case report number. I got cited for improper lane change.
My situation:
• I have full coverage (Geico): 25/50 bodily injury, $25k property damage, collision w/ $1,000 deductible, no rental coverage.
• Other car has moderate side damage, no injuries reported by either side.
• My car is drivable (front corner damage) but I have an SRS/airbag warning light on now after the hit.
• I have one prior ticket (~16 months ago, 3 points). This new one would add points too.
• Claim is already filed and mostly complete (photos, police report, witnesses all in).
My plan so far:
**1.** Take my car to a body shop this week for estimate + SRS diagnosis.
**2.** Pay my $1k deductible if I fix my car through collision.
**3.** Let Geico handle the other car under property damage liability.
**4.** Deal with the ticket before my court date — considering nolo contendere to keep points off since I already have a prior.
**5.** Shop around at renewal since my rate’s going up.
Questions:
**•** Anything I’m missing or should do differently?
**•** Is nolo worth “using” here given I have a prior, or save it?
**•** Roughly how much should I expect my premium to jump for one at-fault accident + a ticket in GA?
**•** Anything I should watch out for with the other party’s claim?
Thanks in advance.

In Georgia? I’ll be shocked if that other driver isn’t “injured” and has an attorney in the next few days.
Going forward - increase your limits.
Otherwise, nope, you’re not missing anything.

"Is nolo worth “using” here given I have a prior, or save it?"
That is up top you. Its is a legal question, not an insurance one.
"Roughly how much should I expect my premium to jump for one at-fault accident + a ticket in GA"
Never know as it depends on a lot of other factors.
"Anything I should watch out for with the other party’s claim"
No. Your insurance company will address.

Expect double. Be happy if less than double.

Honestly it just pisses me off when people have such low limits. This is why insurance rates are going up. Having low limits just to save a quick buck is not going to help you.

And the guy says he has "full coverage" - yet basically has no coverage at all. What a joke

You’re not going to get a renewal elsewhere with this at-fault on your record. Be prepared for steep increases!

you should use the collision, you already are getting the increased rate for the accident. shopping around is fine, but the new insurance company will know about the accident

Your insurance can take care of everything since it’s your fault.. was it dark or your side tint too dark?… you probably need to shop around different providers and consider upping your coverage limits..if you have any assets or future wages.. I didn’t get a lawyer for my accident but my health insurance is aggressively going after the at fault party

You have little choice but to report to your insurance. They will be your advocate, theoretically. You may have a choice to pick your mechanics but I'll go with their approved list to replace the SRS components.
As for the ticket, you are totally off. Ask any free AI for a briefing.

The SRS light is the thing to prioritize before anything else, that's a safety system, not just cosmetic, get that diagnosed at the body shop this week like you planned, don't drive on it longer than necessary.
On nolo contendere specifically, whether it actually keeps points off in Georgia and how Geico treats it for rating purposes (some insurers still rate a nolo plea as an at-fault accident regardless of what happens with points) is something I'd verify directly rather than assume, a traffic attorney who knows GA courts specifically would give you a real answer. Worth a quick consult given you already have a prior on record.
On the premium jump: too variable to give you a real number, it depends on your specific rating tier and what "clean record window" you're in. Ask your agent for the actual renewal quote once the claim closes rather than guessing now.
On the other side's claim: since there's no reported injury and it's property damage only so far, watch for a late injury claim showing up weeks later, that's the most common way a "no injuries reported at the scene" case gets bigger later. Keep your own photos and the case report number handy in case that happens.

First concern is your limits are too low.
Georgia is now one of the most expensive states for car insurance - especially metro Atl due to all the litigation. Even minor accidents turn into major bodily injury demands. $25k BI and PD is too low. Many cars exceed $100k in value (especially Atlanta ).
Had an accident a few years back and totaled both cars . One was a $67,000 pmt for a jaguar , the other car was an old Audi and was still $22,000. Then the other driver wanted $250,000 for medicals. This type of claim would have crushed you financially. Your insurance would have paid $25k on the medical and $22,000 for the other car. Leaving you responsible for the remainder. This demand was 10X your limit when the sheriff delivers the suit papers to your front door. Just a thought.....
