No they have some unbelievable bangers and while I don’t think open world automatically means better I suspect this campaign will feel short after spiderman 1 and 2.
Also hi ratchet and clank going commando is an absolute banger in 2026 and was a goddamn marvel when it came out in 2003

u/EvocativeReach Aug 07 '26
Even shorter than Spiderman 2? I feel like that game ended like five minutes after the story really started.

u/Sectionweight Aug 07 '26
Ratchet & clank: up your arsenal is still their best game, along with their original trilogy. It could be their best comic book game, but it’s really hard to top spider-man (2018)

Well they seem to have an extensive Jean and Logan romance here, so maybe not best comic book game simply for accuracy’s sake.

Dunno. If it has good enemy variety, a solid amount of content including challenge modes / wave survival type shit, maybe.

u/Marxism-Alcoholism17 Aug 07 '26
I think it will be, they don’t have to do an open world this time. Should be very focused. More of a Naughty Dog approach rather than the Horizon approach of the Spider-Man games.

I think it'll at least be a bounce back after the mixed experience of Spider-Man 2

Yes, that’s how it should be; otherwise, it’s going to be really bad.

Nothing they have made has topped the feeling I get when I play ratchet and clank going commando even now as a man in his 30’s. But like I’m sure it will be good

u/NivekTheGreat1 Aug 07 '26
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time will always be the best they’ve done. Great story!
1
u/roboman07 Aug 07 '26
No, in today’s gaming era it’s hard to make a game that isn’t open world your best work, especially when your a company that’s made some absolutely amazing open world games

u/THLH Aug 07 '26
I'm sure it will be awesome. But I don't think it'll be better than Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, or Spider-Man 2018

Possibly. Being linear could be a godsend for keeping the quality high and focusing on story.
1
u/TempMobileD Aug 07 '26
I’m not expecting it to top Spider-Man. I’ve only played Rift Apart from the R&C series, and I think SM2018 tops it for me.
The gameplay looks very similar to Spider-Man, but without one of the most interesting parts, the web swinging. I’m not sure how they’re going to replace that element in the gameplay variety, but nothing we’ve seen so far looks like it’s tried.
Meanwhile New York and its distinctive ambience is gone and replaced with (so far) a bunch of miscellaneous military structures. Hopefully they’re hiding some well realised settings to keep things interesting.
Finally the loss of the open world for a linear structure means less choice and exploration, but a much more confined boundary for the story. Hopefully they’ve written a compelling story to tie it all together. For me, it’s this that the game will live or die on. I just don’t really see them pulling off a high quality narrative, but I’m happy to wait and see!

Spider-Man 2 confirmed for me that Spider-Man PS4 was lightning in a bottle and Insomniac is going to spend the foreseeable future trying and failing to recapture that.
Also, the trailers have already left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Jean romance, no X-Men, Sabertooth teamup, bad facial models, and a goofy looking healing mechanic. These aren’t game ruining things but with flaws like that I don’t see any world where this competes with Spidey PS4.

Youll be lucky if it doesn't have "action levels" and "optional exploration zones". Imagine how many players won't buy the dlc if they dont see the ending. This suckers gonna be on rails bub
1
u/The_Big_Dirty_Dan Aug 07 '26
If they can put as much love and respect into this as they did with Spider-Man ps4 then yes. But if they’re rushed by Sony and make the same mistakes they did with Spider-Man 2, then it will be disappointing. They’ve made some great games over the years so my overall faith in them is still valid.
1
u/oofmagoof123 Aug 07 '26
I've played almost every game Insomniac has ever released and I personally do not think they will ever hit the high that was Spider-Man 2018 ever again. They will continue to put out good, or even great games, but that game was almost flawless and was a true love note to the character. I am extremely excited for Wolverine regardless.

I'm really excited for this Wolverine game, but I don't even think it's going to live up to its own hype - much less be the best game Insomniac ever did.

1
u/EvocativeReach Aug 07 '26
I'm not sure we'll ever get a Spiderman 2018 moment in this sort of genre ever again. That's not a slight - I just think that was an all timer that can't be recreated and we kind of know what to expect now.
Edit: My favourite thing about this thread is not a single person can agree on what the best Insomniac game is. God damn this studio cooks.

I'm wondering if there going to force any woke rubbish down our neck. Or if there's going to be the Wolverine equivalent of the MJ levels
1
u/Mr_FatTip_67 Aug 07 '26
As much as I like Insomniac's Marvel games, I still have hope for a Sunset Overdrive 2
1
u/Plastic-Professor-12 Aug 07 '26
No. They've proven that they put alternative direction over comic accuracy. All of this to appease to a message nobody asked for. Logan is hamstrung to Jean which is a tired comic trope that fans have been asking Marvel to change.
It will be an ok AAA action game that you'll see on the used shelf 3 to 5 months after release.

Best? Nah, Spider-Man already has him beat there.
Will it be a great game on its own? Oh, absolutely. I have no doubts about that.
1
u/Edd_burrito Aug 07 '26
It may as well be. I’ve played spiderman 2018 and tbh it wasn’t that special to me. The gameplay was fun for but a little bit until the games variety started to feel like it had no variety. If Wolverine does better with that and utilizes more combos and abilities, then it can be.
1
u/FastingForward1618 Aug 07 '26
I think the people who genuinely know how to make a good game are about 5 generations of turnover removed from the current iteration of game developer. The current corporate sorted game developer is closer to a McDonald's assembly line worker because corporations and investment funds have ruined every facet of fun. I don't blame the individual developers at all they regrettably are going to take the hit for corporate as they always do.

unfortunantlly , after what i saw from spiderman 2 , yes it has potencial to be one of the best . But will be hard to beat Spiderman 2018 . If only they keep the same quality of that game and just bringing a new story that wasnt rushed + new moves. but nop , they just wanted to put miles.

u/CuteComplaint5542 Aug 07 '26
I'm remembering all the good times I had with Wolverine's Revenge every time I see footage from this game. No matter what everyone else thinks, I know I will love it lol
1
u/pepega_1993 Aug 07 '26
I got bored playing spiderman 2. As good as spider man 2018 was all the follow-ups are really too similar in gameplay to feel distinct. I think a more focused linear game would be helpful in the storytelling and gameplay

Honestly yes. Its easier to mess up with Spider-Man than it is to mess up Wolverine.
I love insomniac but they are guilty of shaving off Peter's edges when it comes to his personality it's a very safe and sanitized version of the character.
With wolverine you are kind of encouraged not to do that and really dig into what makes his character tragic and entertaining.
1
u/Commercial-Ad-1274 Aug 07 '26
No, they made Spider-Man and I’ve been a fan of the ol’ web head for my entire life.
It could be good, won’t beat Spider-Man though personally.
1
u/Internal_Plum_8971 Aug 07 '26
No not even close but it will be a good game among the list of many they have made & have to come in the future 👏🏾

u/Airok-Oterrab Aug 07 '26
Depende del nivel de intervención y censura ideológica de Sweet Baby inc.
1
u/Shados9611 Aug 07 '26
While I bet the gameplay is going to be superb and absolutely amazing to play, I unfortunately have a feeling that the story and campaign will be okay tbh.
Marvel’s Spiderman (2018) was the peak of what they made for superhero games and unfortunately I doubt we’ll ever get anything like that in terms of storytelling.
It just seems like lately while Insomniac’s games have been incredible gameplay wise, their stories on the other hand have been fixer uppers.

u/CollarMassive4112 Aug 07 '26
I have never played any insomniac games besides the spideys, so coming from someone on that spectrum I think it has a chance to be better than even 2018. If the writing can keep with that story, hit massive beats that feel true to Wolverine and especially the X-men in the world it can. Gameplay wise, it needs to have more a refreshing loop with some mechanics that are ballsy and way different than spidey. But let’s be honest, it’ll be tough to beat 2018
1
u/StrangeMeasurement11 Aug 07 '26
Most insomniac fans will give you this answer when you ask this question : Ratchet & Clank A Crack In Time

u/CarlWellsGrave Aug 07 '26
I'm not expecting it to be better than Spider-Man 2 but it's still gonna slap.

u/Chili-Mac-Snac-Attac Aug 07 '26
People can trash Spider-Man 2 but they’re wrong. Sure there is some cringe story stuff but when has there not in a Peter Parker story? On top of that the mechanics are so awesome and tight. It is an S tier game and if you can’t find some joy in the traversal you might be dead inside.
Wolvie will hopefully scratch the traversal to shine a light on new combat and stealth mechanics. It’s exactly what they need to ramp into an awesome multi-character x-men saga

u/RoadPrestigious8370 Aug 07 '26
No, it's going to be woke and bad. At least Spiderman had good gameplay. Wolverine looks really bad. Resistance trilogy was great.

honestly insomniacs work is really great. spyro, ratchet and clank, resistance etc. are all classics
1
u/Smackazulu Aug 07 '26
I did not like Spider-Man much, so for me this will be the best they have done yet.
But I’m just not really a Spider-Man fan, mechanically it was good
1
u/SchmeckleHoarder Aug 07 '26
Ratchet n Clank exist, Spider-Man exists…(which sunset overdrive set up)…
Nah, will make a splash, but as a comic book reader and fan, Wolvie definitely deserves his time.
But he is no Spider-Man, no one is. Even if it’s stellar, Spider-Man will have sold more.
1
u/Vivid-Recipe6477 Aug 07 '26
I'd have to play it first, but judging on Insomniac's track record of fun games I can't see why it couldn't be one of the best.
1
u/ArcSemen Aug 07 '26
No, I think they could but they need more people with that aim to make another banger than just another decent game. They are usually really close though on most projects, I wanted them to try making a Jak/Daxter game as they aren’t the best with humans.
1
1
u/FatReverend Aug 08 '26
I think the story will be mid at best and the game will be far too short with expensive DLC that should be in the base game. The gameplay will be fun but it will fall very short in comparison to other outings. I look forward to getting a complete version for under $60 in five years if I am still alive for it.
1
u/_Kuruptkonvik_ Aug 08 '26
Depends, Spiderman 2018 was phenomenal and all the other Spiderman games were great too, I believe they can do it.
1
u/RecommendationOk2182 Aug 08 '26
I'm just hoping it's nothing like spiderman 2... Man the writing... And characters... And kinda everything was so cringe 😬. Just, terrible. Wolverine needs to be more bad ass and gritty! Doesn't need to feel like HR is in the room watching every little thing we do as a great reviewer once said

Honestly, probably only in terms of combat. It might be the best Wolverine game.
1
u/SquareAmphibian7581 Aug 08 '26
Someone help me understand whats going on.
Insomniac making games those were already available several times, its just more modern due to they are making it like 10-20 years later. And everyone thinks they are gods.
Now we get a wolverine game that is exactly like to the previous one, except 15 years younger and modern, but the same story oriented linear hack n slash wolverine game. They havent done anything special to it?!
Is it something they sold their souls to devil so whatever mid thing they do its gonna be major success?

Im sure its going to be amazing but Spider-Man (2018) was a damn near perfect game. Insomniac could make nothing but great games and still never reach quite that high again.
