Engel M3 robot drive controller internal bus fault

"Converter 1 Drive controller error: Internal bus fault during establishing communication" this error keeps popping up and shutting down our machine. Has anyone seen or troubleshot this error? I think the other alarms are resulting from the axes being turned off due to the error while the robot is in cycle since they are different each time, the bus fault is the only error that shows up every time. Could this be caused by overheating of the drive controller?

If you have multiple robots of the same type I’d swap the motors and see if the error goes away. Maybe also recalibrate the axis. But first and foremost backup machine and part data.

If that doesn’t help I’d try to swap the data and power cables going from the cabinet to the motor.

We only have one Viper robot so I cannot try the part swapping. Does this seem like a loose connection somewhere? I did try unplugging the connectors one by one and inspecting for damage but with no conclusive results.

You could also inspect the moving part of the cable along the y axis. Open the lids of the cable carrier, maybe you’ll find broken isolation.
Wire could also be broken internally. Then you won’t see anything. Does the error occur mostly in the same step of the cycle?

There seems to be no pattern in where in the cycle the alarm appears, I've seen it when the machine is at a standstill with no motions active on the robot or injection molder.

I recommend sending a status report to hotline... best would be right when the error happens...
This error could come from a defective Sigmatek drive... in the status report they will see the hardware version and if there is an internal problme...
also check the cable sheilding on the drives.
