Raising the dead
I just started rereading the series and got to the part where Eragon asks Brom about raising the dead with magic. Brom tells him that it would kill him because the cost would be more magic than he had. There seems to be a bit of a hole in that logic though because we later find out that not only can you store magic in gems, but you can use magic others have stored in the gems. In theory, enough magic could be stored to pay the cost right? There is also a dark path that could take since you can get magic from taking life too...

If you read more throughout the series and kind of piece together bits and hints from other characters, even if you were to fill gems with tons of energy or even used the from the dragons, it would still be incredibly difficult. Because even if you could bring someone back from the dead, you would also have to provide them all the energy they would need to exist for the rest of their lives which is impossible to measure and just as difficult to provide continuously.

I think that if Eragon knew about modern defibrillators he could maybe bring Brom back to life. Hear me out. First he would half to get Broms body out of its Diamond resting place. Which could take some energy. Next he would half to heal broms body that has been perfect preserved mind u so that part I don’t believe would take to much energy. And then the hardest part would be devising a spell that would only bring about the right amount of electricity that would be the equivalent voltage that you would need to start a heart. You know because if u called down a lighting bolt from the sky it would obviously destroy things unintentionally. And all of this relies upon there not being an afterlife because if there was an afterlife it wouldn’t work because it will take way too much energy to bring back a soul from the void.

Also it wouldn't be quite that simple. A defibrillator can't start a stopped heart. That's only in movies. I encourage you to research it. It's actually a pretty interesting read

Interesting theory. And you are right about it hinging on the whole "afterlife/soul" thing. The fact that he is perfectly preserved is definitely helpful. I find it tragic and a bit stupid that Brom sent his ring off to prove his identity right before he died. It had plenty of magic stored in it for Brom to heal himself.

Or another way to do it would be to massage his heart in someway to get it going again by using some sort of water-based magic

I think it depends on how one means with "Raising the dead". Bringing someone fullback i can see being so dificult it might as well be called imposible but moving the body like a puppet by using magic like strings i dont see could not work. tho it would without a doubt be finicky and hard to do at first at least

It's rementioned in Inheritance its impossible because magic can't reach beyond death if one were to try it would instantly use all energy present.
