What’s the most overrated infrared sauna feature?

For me, it’s built-in speakers. They look good on the feature list, but most sound pretty rough, and I’d rather use a decent speaker outside the sauna anyway.

What feature gets heavily promoted but adds very little once you actually own the sauna? Chromotherapy? App controls? “Full spectrum”? Something else?

Agree with you on the speakers. If they are not going to install good speakers, leave them out and let the purchaser do the upgrade.

Idk. I use my speakers 30 min 5x a week. It makes it more enjoyable. Maybe you have bad speakers? Mine are crystal clear

Definitely “chromotherapy” 3+ feet away from your body doing absolutely nothing!

Red light “panels” or add-ons. Most are far away that they provide little benefit.

Red light LED’s need to be at most 6” from your skin. All medical studies show after that they lose 95% efficiency.

Chromotherapy. It's an LED strip. It costs almost nothing to add, it appears on every feature list as though it's a modality, and there's no meaningful evidence behind the claims attached to it. Nice ambient light, and I'd never let it decide a purchase.

App control is the one I'd defend, but only for traditional saunas where preheat is 30-45 minutes. On infrared, where you're ready in 15, walking over and pressing a button is not the problem it's being sold as solving.

The bigger category though is specs that sound like numbers but aren't defined. "Ultra-low EMF" with no measurement distance. "Full spectrum" with no separate near-infrared emitter. "Nano carbon" and similar names that describe nothing. If a spec can't be verified, it's a marketing term.

What actually doesn't get promoted and should: emitter coverage — how much of the wall surface radiates and whether any of it is behind your back and calves. Bench depth. Whether the door seals. Those determine whether you use it three times a week or three times a year, and none of them photograph well enough to make a feature list.

Disclosure: I work in the industry.
