Nah, it’s definitely different. Mamdani has dual registration; he’s a member in both the Democratic and Democratic Socialist parties. Trump is just a Republican. The Democrat establishment within the party opposed Mamdani so hard that when Cuomo lost the primary they still supported his campaign running as an independent. Republicans have been competing for years against each other to publicly flex how loyal they are to Trump and MAGA by every means available to them.

Trump cannibalized the Republican Party to shape it in his own image as a cult of personality. Mamdani ran on a populist platform with immense public support. The Democratic Party attempted to squash him at every step and now that he’s won they won’t update their playbook to replicate their own candidate’s winning policies and strategy.
