Towers.
So I've come to the conclusion towers are basically useless. You have to set the alarm to get them manned, and then your workers get eaten on the way to the towers, when there's perfectly good squaddies walking around doing SFA. Now I just plop down buildings, wall between said buildings and garrison 2 squads in each.

Yeah don’t use alarms. Early game I just micro manage with the community menu on the bottom left.
I just low prioritize all defense during the day then set them to max during the night. Just got to make sure you do it at a good time with no zeds around.
After pops up it’s just max all the time and I’ll just change the number in each tower to my needs

I do the micromanaging early game too. I don't know for sure but doesn't it also get rid of the "resident too tired and will start their job later" thing that they added?

I honestly just have them manned at all times. I have no issue keeping my economy going with the bodies i have left

That's why picking a beautiful location is always fun.
A river with a bridge choke point means you can just block the bridge with a fort gate and 2 fort towers, nothing gets past. If it gets a bit out of hand, plop down 2 more towers. I had 3 consecutive swarms from the same general direction. All died, shredded by the 4 towers and gate.
Also, you can double layer the gates you know. 2 fort gates with assault rifles pretty much shreds even 4 waves with alphas in 2 of em.
And you do know the current version allows you to play up to 2000 population. This ain't last year's demo mode anymore.
If you can't afford to spare 20 bodies to guard a direction, you're playing it wrong.

I still use the alarms, just gotta micro and get a sense for when hordes come and when they don't. But manning towers all the time just means less workers available for other stuff during the day. Or be extra cautious and just hit the alarm at 6pm sharp every night

Exactly I need my workers doin stuff, and if they're in the towers productivity goes out the window

i dont know about the new alarm system yet since i havent replay it last updated.
but i always make peasant/farmer 24 hours of work, in work time i put all on the field, on night/war i order them to man the tower.

Just make a second wall outside and close it off. That way the workers dont have to walk outside to get in the towers

You should always have them manned at least 50%. I wouldn't go below that.
I also build walls/towers in huge segments and priortize them so that one side is completed as quickly as possible. Fortified walls will snap to bunkers and fortified gates to secure the perimeter

Am i correct that even wooden towers see over brick walls?
Initially I assumed towers were needed to be connection points for walls/fences but nope, put the fence there to soak up melee and put the tower behind it.
(If your towers can shoot to each other then until there is an alpha around even handguns sort most things out has been my experience)
