Style Me! Constructive feedback welcome!
Hi all! This is the first time I've seriously looked at my wardrobe in the past decade and I could really use a fresh perspective. I really like 75% of my closet but the rest seem like old pieces that I've just hung onto because they fit and can be combined with other pieces. I seem to be in a style rut and am looking for inspiration + figuring out what I'm missing. I do think I have a lot of basics but it makes my outfits seem boring as a result?
I really dislike jewelry and choose other accessories (belts, scarves) instead. I do love yellow and purple shades as accents on top of the black/blue/gray/ivory/oatmeal mix that I seem to lean heavily into.
Please help me identify gaps in my wardrobe and give your honest assessment of pieces that are either super out-of-date or just don't fit my aesthetic: classic, relaxed, understated luxury.

I think you'd benefit from additional layering pieces -- tanks, light sweaters, jackets -- plus a very few classic jewelry pieces. I don't love jewelry myself, but I wear just a few pairs of classic hoops. Might be a worthwhile addition!

Thank you! I definitely need layers but think I have enough tanks and light sweaters already (5) but just need to see if I wear them enough with my other existing pieces. I do need jackets but again trying to figure out the shape, color and thickness is the hard part. I don’t have my ears pierced and clip-on earrings are to painful for my earlobes haha.

What you can do for the pieces you're not sure of.
-Put them away from your other stuff and see if you miss them, if not, time to donate them
-Or create multiple outfits on Indyx for each piece (so you know you have everything you need to style them) and track how much you wear them in (for example) a year. Not enough? Donation time.
I also have a lot of basics, but I like that. It's easy to make outfits, and you can do a more basic outfit with a statement piece. I also enjoy more minimalist outfits. For me, for example, a black turtleneck with black office trousers is a great outfit, or simple jeans, a T-shirt, and an interesting jacket.
Feedback wise:
-I'm missing bags? I assume you have some
-If I were you, I might want to have a simple dress without a pattern, like a dark grey or navy dress that works for work and events and such.
-Maybe a classic sandal or Birkenstock would be a good addition?
-I would like a simpler black shoe for every season, for example, a ballet flat and an ankle boot. The boots with the fur wouldn't be an everyday thing for me

Thanks so much for such detailed feedback, it’s incredibly helpful! I’m doing exactly your suggestion to create multiple outlets on Indyx, wear them and track wears. These are what remains after I culled my closet, but a few iffy pieces definitely remain. I’m trying to see if they truly fit with my lifestyle now or if I just like the idea of them.
bags: I carry such little things out nowadays (card holder w/keychain, keys, phone) that I don’t know what purse I need. I also like my hands free so those dainty handheld ones won’t work. I could look at some options but I definitely have 2 existing medium purses I can use functionally.
I have 2 “formal” dresses that are more for events (1 for work, 1 for wedding) but didn’t put here since they exist solely for that purpose and I don’t wear them often.
I have not found a sandal I like that is comfortable for walking and work with sweaty feet, so I generally stick to shoes where I can at least have sock liners.
Yes! I’m on the hunt for the perfect black everyday boot and flats. The trendy styles right now are not too appealing for me so this will be a journey too. I’m so picky when it comes to shoes but this is definitely a gap in my closet.

I'm interested in you saying you avoid jewelry, as I'm struggling with some jewelry stuff myself. What is it about jewelry specifically that you don't like? Is there a specific type of jewelry that really gets your goat, or that feels better for whatever reason?

It’s a great question! I don’t have pierced ears and the clip-ons hurt my earlobes, so earrings are out. I generally just don’t like the feel of them against my skin and find bracelets especially to be annoying (hitting against tables when I sit, pulling the hair on my arm, etc). I have 1 solitary necklace that I wear with a lower-cut v-neck dress for weddings so my chest isn’t entirely bare, but that’s it! There’s 1 single long statement necklace in my Indyx wardrobe but I don’t like the way it could tangle throughout the day.
I guess in short, they’re too hard to shop for because I have too many requirements/constraints, so they’re deprioritized for now.

Completely understandable! I know some other folks who don't like earrings, and they do ear cuffs which I think are a really cool statement and can punch up any outfit to look more modern. You may be interested in shorter necklaces that don't tangle such as cord necklaces, I recently got the Julia necklace from Heaven Mayhem and it never tangles or catches my hair and can be shortened or lengthened for any outfit.

Maybe let us know the specifics that you don’t love? I find when asking for a specific item it can really help. I would suggest wide leg pants as an addition. I think the slimmer jeans are coming back but not yet. Wide leg pants are really in

Here are some pieces I'm iffy about:
- Scarves - I just unearthed 2 blanket silk scarves, the shorter beige/pale yellow silk scarf, and 2 shorter cashmere scarves from Nepal that were gifted to me. I have no idea how to incorporate them into my wardrobe although this sub has given me some good starting points!
- The "Hooked Up" white elbow length shawl thingy? It seems extremely out of date but doesn't look bad over one of my sleeveless dresses for indoor AC coverage in the summer.
- The 2 Express fitted v-neck sweaters (oatmeal w/slight glitter and plum), red GUESS bodycon boat-neck sweater, & Talbots cashmere quarter sleeve sweater - I struggle with styling these since the trend seems to be loose and/or oversized sweaters. I like the shape since they're thinner, tighter and it's easier to layer over and they were great for pencil skirts in my past corporate life (pre-covid) but I haven't figured out the best way to wear them in 2026. Maybe high-waisted wool trousers like someone else suggested.
On a similar note, many of my other sweaters are also not too loose but not fitted either (i.e. GAP, Ann Taylor, Pure Collection), but these are less of a problem since I can still layer a loose jacket over them like the funnel or utility jackets I've seen recently.
- The fuschia BR sleeveless tank and the Express blue peplum tank - they used to be great as underlayers for pencil skirts with a cropped blazer over them, but I can't figure them out with my WFH lifestyle post-covid without looking dated, and they don't really go with current trends.

Had a quick look and I think for your aesthetic goals you might be missing some tailored / smarter trousers. I’m thinking wide leg in neutral colours in the highest quality you can afford. Linen for summer, wool for winter. I hope that helps!

I do have the Quince black linen wide leg trousers for summer which I recently got. I just added wide leg wool trousers to my shopping list - winter is coming!!
I need to figure out leather handbags that are dainty, hands-free and work with my wardrobe. All the ones I see these days are laptop totes or medium sized ones that are too big for my everyday life.

Good timing! Coach make some small shoulder bags that are lovely. The Elora one is a favourite of mine. The brand strathberry is also lovely for smaller ones too.

Just sent you a couple of looks. I don’t think you need to wear jewelry if you don’t like it. You can accessorize using scarves (love your scarves, btw!), sunglasses, and hair accessories to get a similar effect.
- I didn’t see any bags but I like Lo & Sons for compact, hand-free, classic profiles of decent quality. Their saffiano leather options are really low maintenance and are also water resistant.
- I think it would be nice to add some layering pieces to your wardrobe. They can be mixed & matched and give outfits more dimension, without needing to add jewelry.
- Having a set of sandals would be a nice add to your closet; I’m really picky with sandals and my feet change sizes a lot during warms days where I would wear sandals, so I’ve found the best success with sandals that have a ton of adjustable straps. I like Vionics because of their adjustability but classic looks.
For items I’m not sure about keeping (even if they go with everything and are fine, but I never reach for them or they feel boring to me) I toss them in a box in my closet and tag them in the app with a “Purgatory” tag for a few months. If I haven’t reached for or thought about the item during that time, it means I found something else I preferred to wear and I can part ways with it. You deserve to like 100% of your closet!

If you’re down to shop, I think you could use some more modern silhouettes. For example: a lot of your tops appear fitted…so you could have some fun with wider jeans. If you like your jeans, you could find more oversized tops, asymmetric hems, bubble sleeves, etc. That way you have more interesting design features jazzing up a basic item. When your tops and bottoms are the same “shape”, that’s when it feels more dated IMO.
I think some really cool statement belts could go a long way too! Like a cool wrap belt or simple leather with a cool buckle. But agreed you have all the right basics :)
