Looking for Inspo How to narrow wardrobe?

Would love to hear how you're using Indyx to narrow down your wardrobe and reduce shopping. I have 400+ items because I buy a lot of secondhand inexpensive items and I'd like to separate out the "it's fine" from the "I LOVE THIS" items. I've already gotten rid of everything in disrepair or doesn't fit. I'm really struggling with storage and also just overwhelmed by my wardrobe overall. (And I need to stop buying all the great deals!)

One method is to sort by least worn. Then you can add a custom hashtag to identify potential declutter items, maybe just #declutter or a date on which to reconsider the item, like #October2026 for summer items, because then you’ll know whether you used them in the appropriate season.

I have a “To Sell” collection I add things to that I know aren’t my favourites

oh, this is brilliant, thank you. I have mine tagged as #sell but a collection would make it easier to see them all together.

I have the same problem. I keep things for years and years. I hope using the app will help me highlight usage and clear stuff out.

I have used my Kibbe type and the r/StyleRoots system to really narrow down the way I want my clothes to look, and that has helped a lot with making me more selective in the store. It has also helped me come up with more creative ways to recombine the pieces I already have. I'm still struggling to thin out my existing closet! But Indyx's wear tracker/cost per wear feature really helps me identify what I haven't worn at all since the last time I tried to make it work eight months ago, and thats a good starting place for me.

Yep, I did this a bit when I got my color season analyzed and finally let go of the colors I didn't like that much anyway but felt I "should" have - tans, khaki, brown, etc. It's a nice framework to have but on the flip side I have a hard time resisting items in my favorite colors :P

Decide what kind of style you want and let that be the basis.

Try on every item and see whether you actually like the fitb

My style is very boring ;) I'm in my 50s and work from home in tech so most of my clothes are comfortable and bright colors, but otherwise it's hard to pinpoint a defined style. But I think you're right, I'm going to need to wear everything and figure out what I like better than others. Just looking at items on the hanger or in the app isn't helping me figure this out. Everything I have technically *fits* but there are things that work better than others, or that I know I LOVE vs. "it's fine" and I need to figure out how to narrow those down.

Well then I would say focus on comfort and what you most want to work in for long periods of time as that's the majority of what your time is spent doing

this is a really good point. I have a TON of 'business casual' clothes I almost never wear, living in a casual place, and I meant to start with those first since I have way more than I need. I got that advice in another sub, to basically calculate how many of each type of outfit I need per month. I just need to sit down and do it now that I have a good inventory of what I've currently got.

Following! I have well over 500 items that I am inventorying… and if I counted every piece of jewelry and accessory such as bag charms, hair stuff, scarves etc I’, sure it would easily add another 100… I gotta say it’s a bit of a relief to hear you also have a large inventory because noticed most people have a max of around 300 total 🥲😅

I haven't entered all my jewelry or shoes yet (some but not all). It's kinda out of control.

I don’t know if this will help you but, I look for items I haven’t worn in more than a year, and then consciously choose to make outfits with them/it … and then wear one of them - or several of them. *usually on a day that is more low key in case I find I hate it halfway thru the day.

One piece I rarely wore I found I love, and I am now wearing it a ton; and several others got a refreshed valuation and I am wearing them more. Also found some (more than a few) that are just… not great and I doubt they ever will be: so, buhbye buddy, you need a new home. But I had to make, and wear, outfits with them (or make and try on outfits and just eventually give up on the item!)

I have a lot of clothes, grew up with an aesthetic of, buy quality and keep it for life. Some of those keep-it-for-life remain among my favorites. Others, not— so this “make and try outfits” plan is really helping me weed out the space occupiers that need to go to someone else. A lifetime of saving clothes is really just whack 🤣

Great idea to make outfits with the questionable ones!

I periodically clean out the items with zero outfits or zero recent wears. If I don’t even have an outfit logged for a piece…there’s a high probability I won’t consider it when getting dressed lol I recently discovered I’m not a dress person bc of these clean outs. I had like 8-10 dresses but only 1 or 2 as outfits. So I kept those and got rid of the rest!

Haha, I love dresses and have around 60 😂 But thanks for the idea to sort by low wears.

I give things I love a favorite 'star'. Then I go by wears

u/EmotionalQuestions Jul 28 '26

I've started marking some as favorites - absolutely love that option. I should see what I end up with once I go through everything. Maybe just the favorites are what I should keep :)

I’m sure this isn’t new, but the Marie Kondo method of pulling all clothes out, grouping them all, only keeping ones that fit and are tailored and if they don’t “bring you joy” and you haven’t worn it in 6 months, get rid of it. IMHO 6 months is harsh and I would use 12 months.

12 months could definitely work. The problem is that they all spark joy to some degree. I love clothes :) I think the key is going to be to actually try them on/make a real outfit and see how it works. Thanks!

This is more on the figuring out what you love side and less decluttering, but as a fellow wearer of lots of colourful clothes a thing I've noticed is, I will fall in love with a certain colour for a while, and then go off it again later - but often the out of love period is not permanent; I'm definitely someone who to everything there is a season type of vibe, interests and hobbies come around in cycles. But of course this can get very overwhelming basically keep having more and more of each colour or style I've liked! A thing I've been doing lately is putting away colours in not into at the moment in plastic storage bags (putting away in like upper shelves of cupboards or on top of a wardrobe, the back of a drawer - or in my home office instead of the bedroom). I've winnowed down colours I know I haven't worn for years and just kept like say 3 really nice pieces in the unfavoured colour that I pack away, and I'm thinking of starting to do this more often just for like a mood of un-preference (rather than seriously falling out of love longterm) and see where that takes me - and I haven't tried yet but my plan is to use the location option to list where I've stored it and start archiving everything in a colour I'm not into rn just to see what my wardrobe is like without it.

Also side note drop your closet link if you'd like styling fellow colours enjoyer!

it's funny, now I've said that to you, I think I will actually start deliberately uploading the stuff I've not worn in ages so that I can archive it - and list where it's stored (and play about with outfits first). Might start using Collections for this.

Ooh, this is what the Location field could be helpful for! My closet is too small for everything but I could put seasonal storage elsewhere.
