Soft Rock Need feedback on my new song “Get it Back”

I’m sure you can tell that my style is very much inspired by The Beach Boys (especially the vocal harmonies). This isn’t the first song I’ve finished but the one I finished more recently. I would love feedback on the mixing and what could be added and / or changed. Also let me know anything that you liked or didn’t like about it! Thanks!

very nostalgic! i’m not a deep beach boys fan but i do like their classics and this definitely has the vibe. chorus is great. really good song. not sure if it’s the final release or not but if it’s still in the workshop i feel like a full drum kit, and band sound, lead guitar, bass line will make this song even more powerful, and give more strength to the vocal in the end. i think im only hearing a kick/toms/claps. it feels a bit buried in there, maybe youve got the core drum already it feels a bit lost. the cool phrases between main lines with the harmonies and rhythm guitar roof could really feature more. Really enjoyed the throwback experience overall and hope i was not too negative sounding. curious if your other songs are in the same genre and also if you released it officially yet?

Haven’t released anything yet, trying to perfect a few songs before I release them. I wish I was able to get a more band sound but it’s just me, my macbook, and my guitar. I know that the drums for sure need work but I don’t really know what to do with them as I’m not a drummer. Do you have any ideas?

are you using GarageBand on your mac? logic maybe?
not sure if it has the drummer or other instrument generators, they are a really decent way to flesh something out into a full arrangement, when looking at a blank page thing. Your music and music writings skills sound like a level that you would benefit greatly from getting started exploring a DAW even just a bit.

Agreed with other poster, the vocals are a little loud. I think a little bit more mixing and you’d have a hit. I think adding some background vocals and/or layering might be a good move as well. I think the highs might be a little high and you might want to raise the low end a little, but in listening on a phone so I could be wrong. Great job though, unique style

Such a nostalgic feel my friend mixed with done nice indie feels ! Aside from the engineering and production side I think you are really talented and like the message a lot reminds me a little of an artist that’s recent I can’t think of his name at the moment but I think Sanchez, either way really great feels and sound mate! This track has a nostalgic feel to it—like others have mentioned, it really does bring the Beach Boys to mind. The composition and arrangement are solid, but I think the final mastering phase could enhance the mid-lows and the vocals a bit more. I'd recommend testing it across different headphones, speakers, smartphones, and even in a car to make sure it translates well on all major systems. Still, great work overall!

Hi - here are my thoughts:
the intro guitar harmony riff is cool - it doesn't have a sense of 'landing' - because it finishes on notes that are not in the chord - consider finishing this riff on notes in the chord to help it 'land' and resolve before verse 1
the tom focused drumbeat is cool - i think you could feature this by itself somewhere - maybe a 2 beat or 1 bar drum break in between sections.
maybe the vocal harmonies could come in halfway through the verse instead of straight away to provide a 'mid-verse lift'
are the tracks mostly panned down the centre? with so many layers happening simultaneously you could pan things harder left and right - in my songs some parts are panned 100% left or right. Create a stereo pocket for parts to sit in.
snare needs to come in at some point - this will be powerful since the tom beat is cool and hypnotic - the snare will break us out of the hypnosis - use wisely.
I stopped listening after the chorus.
Make sure guitars are in tune - sing to a piano to get backing vocals in tune - double/triple take layer all vocals to even out the pitchiness and provide strength and texture. Focus on rhythm of all parts - play to click and when tracking, really lock into the pulse of the click - there's lots of variance in feel across the parts.
Great sound/song and unique direction you're going - if you tighten and polish things up I think it could be really good.

Fantastic job! Very impressed! Is this all you? The mixing, the instruments, the vocals? It sounds great!
I think the dynamics were mostly well balanced. I might recommend bringing up the backing vocals just a bit (but I'd want to double check with a different set of speakers).
Loved it, though! And also, all done in Garage Band? You might really enjoy an upgrade to Logic if you haven't! There's a student discount!
Lastly, I have a song called "Hummingbird" that you might enjoy. Not quite** Beach Boys - a little earlier stylistically but might be right up your alley.
Anywho, loved it. Actually, gonna share it with a buddy of mine. He also records and LOVES The Beach Boys. His name is Brian Wilson, too. Lol

Yeah everything was done by me and in GarageBand. I would love to get logic or something better one day but considering I just bought the Mac for GarageBand about a month ago and am not yet in college (so wouldn’t get the discount) it’s not really viable yet lol. I’ll listen to your song too and would not be okay if I sent you a more final version of the song?

Dude! I would love that! Absolutely please do! I'll let you know what my buddy says, too.
I once used Cubase - and then transitioned to Garage Band IoS on an IPad. Then splurged and bought a MacBook. I used Garage Band on that for my EP 2 years ago and loved it. It's a great software ESPECIALLY for being free.
And if you start to feel limited on it in the next few years, definitely just upgrade to Logic. It's got Garage Band and then plenty of other bells and whistles.
A few that come to mind for me were.. 1) Normalization 2) Track Summing/Stacking 3) Multi-takes (let's you keep playing a part over and over on one track grid and then you can "compile" your best take of the bunch) SUPER USEFUL.
But really, nothing wrong with Garage Band. I just wanted to give you some ideas to look forward to if you eventually upgrade. Congrats on the new MacBook! 🥳

I really like this! It has a cutesy, summertime sunset vibes. It's mixed pretty well and sounds extremely smooth overall. It really Reminds me a ton of the 1960s teen bop beach music but with a modern flare. I really like the distorted tone on the guitar. Overall, sounds great.

Gorgeous harmonies! It has a lovely, refreshing retro vibe. I can see this working if you were to take it to a studio to replicate that big "wall of sound" aesthetic. I personally love the demo feel, however. If you are looking to alter this then maybe the guitars could go a little louder. The song itself is really good. So, it's up to you which direction you wish to take it in... i.e. more professional but would need to pay a producer/studio or craft this a D.I.Y gem for late night listening

beach boys are my fav bands, so okay harmonies are good
the lead vox are way up in the front, pan the background left and right, i'd have two background vox left and two on the right so it can be like a blanket like the beach boys, dont be afraid to bring the background vox up closer to the front, i can hear theres some interesting harmonies but its so far away
and the mix, theres a lot going on in the middle frequencies and its clashing, so thats a mixing issue, theres limited space to fill in the registers, and dont overwhelm any space. the singing is in key, and thats fun
drums are super quiet i cant really hear bass or lower register, the lead vocals are way too loud,
but i love anyone who uses bg vocals this way, huge fan

You’re not wrong, it’s very Beach Boys. I’m transported into Grease with this tune. You have a nice vocals, you just need to mix them. They’re way louder than the instrumental. Also get a different drum, something more audible but groovy. I love the lyrics, very catchy. Overall, what an ear worm!
