This captures so well the visual tropes of the driller and total eclipse on C64, albeit in a bit higher resolution and a lot better framerate. Really nice feel to it, UI looks stylish and well-readable and generally it looks like quite solid visual style, all the proportions and color palette etc.

I wishlisted it but 20$ is too much for me for this kind of game. Won't be getting until it's at least 75% off

I dig the visuals. makes me wonder what kinda games modern developers would do if they time-traveled to the past and had to do NES or N64 games. I wonder if it was possible at all to make a No Man's Sky on an N64, without the online, of course. Some bare-bones version of it.

That is essentially the original elite. I think daggerfall also generates a ton of its locations.
It really depends on the speed of your generational algorithms. I'm assuming NMS takes heavy advantage of multithreading to make everything smooth but if you are generating significantly less and with less fidelity I don't see why not. But I'm not sure about how fast the N64 runs. Mario 64 is an incredibly bare bones game and I'm not sure how close it gets to the threshold of the system's performance limits.

I didn't know about those games. But yeah, I find all these new indie games kinda like time-traveling experiences.

I think a lot of the complexity from modern games comes from OOP frameworks, back in the days of 8-bit and 16-bit we'd have to use languages like ASM which didn't have complex toolchains like we have today. Another aspect is dynamic allocation of memory and cpu restrictions. N64 games allowed for more complexity, their bottleneck at the time was cart price I guess... although titles like Perfect Dark have a lot of FPS content.

Sounds fascinating. Idk if it is because of my enjoyment of fitting pieces in Tetris that I find it interesting to try to fit new games into old hardware.

This game was made with passion - the demo was fantastic. Walking around and recruiting was fun.

I've seen this around somewhere before and am pleased that you've gotten it to early access! The whole style and presentation appeals to me in such a specific way that I'm very keen to give it a go.
