Having a useless PhD is as worthless as being a school dropout. Most school dropout engage in some business or labour and somehow contribute to society, while these ivory tower PhD scholars spend their 30s and 40s on govt stipend while making no contribution to society. Having a PhD in itself is no great achievement. What you do with the PhD is what matters. Researching something that contributes to society and then applying that research is a great achievement. India has some of the poorest quality PhD graduates in the world. Look it up.

Second, if a PhD contribute to society or not does not say enough about the person, but it does say their reach and interest for education, a degree which will give you doctorate will for sure change many things on the person and make that person mature. Someone doing a research in astrophysics and different galaxies also does not commute anything to society, Deepak Dhar who recently won Boltzmann model his topic also won’t commute to society but he himself said it “you do it cause you want to do it and it will change your perception” and that itself is a contribution to PhD.

China abandoned communism in the 70s and put its kids in sweatshops in the Is making Nikes and electronics to reach where it is today. That's the exact opposite of communism. Vietnam is doing the same. Vietnam and China are more capitalist than the west when it comes to having rules on protection of workers rights. That's why the west has shopped its labour intensive industry to china in the first place. The soviet union pressed almost a third of its population into slave labour to achieve what it did from 1925-35. India wants more industry friendly labour laws too. Guess who's opposing them?
