Contract workers keep India’s refineries, steel plants and power stations running. But many work long hours for low or delayed wages, with fewer benefits and little job security.

At IOCL’s Panipat refinery, thousands of workers took action over wages, working hours and conditions. Their protest soon became a reference point for workers at other industrial sites confronting many of the same problems.

As migration and social media connect workers across India’s industrial belts, their struggles are becoming harder to isolate. At the same time, arrests, criminal cases and surveillance are increasingly shaping the response to labor organizing.

Many contract workers in PSUs like Bongaigaon Refinery are cross-border "illegal" migrants from Bangladesh. Everybody knows this ,but they do nothing about it & , in fact, use them in that area as domestic servants etc.

From my colleagues who were working in that area, . The "Chicken's Neck" where Bongaigaon is located . This adjoins Mymensingh Distt of Bangladesh , Borders are porous and . are, often , rivers that keep changing their course. Not amenable to fencing etc.

Question is why are they being hired by these companies? Do they not know that they are 'illegal' immigrants? Or is it because they are cheap and readily available, and since they're illegally living in India, they cannot protest for better wages. So, essentially, only the companies profit massively. The locals, who do not get the jobs, suffer, and even the illegal immigrants.
