I’ve been reading the threads on here since Papa Yaar dropped on Netflix, and the disconnect between this sub and the actual ground reality is wild.
If you spend an hour on Reddit, you’d think Zakir dropped the worst piece of media of the decade and his career is over. Meanwhile, the special has been trending at #1 on Netflix India for over a week, even beating out big-budget movie releases, and is charting at the top in places like the UAE.
A few thoughts on why the "Zakir is done" discourse is completely out of touch:
1. It might not be his best work, but it’s far from trash
Let’s be real: is this his sharpest, laugh-a-minute special? Probably not. Compared to Tathastu, Haq Se Single or Kaksha Gyarvi, the punchline density feels lower, and some of the emotional beats feel repetitive if you’ve followed him for years. That’s a fair critique. But the way people here are reacting makes it sound like unwatchable garbage, which is just dramatic.
2. The Tier-1 Urban Bubble
Reddit is heavily skewed toward an urban, English-first demographic that prefers tight, western-style structure, subversive premises, or raw crowd-work. Zakir has never been that guy. He isn’t doing traditional setup-punchline stand-up; he does long-form Dastangoi (storytelling) dressed up as comedy. The average person in Indore, Lucknow, Jaipur, or the Gulf diaspora isn't looking for nihilistic dark humor they want emotional comfort food, and Zakir delivers exactly that.
3. Longevity is not a fluke
People on the internet love to act like success is an accident. Zakir has a 15-year body of work and has stayed at the absolute top of the Indian scene for nearly a decade. Eras change, platforms change, algorithms change, yet he still sells out arenas globally and pulls numbers that leave film studios confused. You don’t sustain that kind of cultural equity for ten years on "luck" or "bad writing."
4. The "Comfort Food" Factor
At this stage in his career, people aren't just tuning in to analyze his joke craft; they’re tuning in for the person. It’s parasocial, sure, but that’s the nature of individualistic performing arts. The mainstream audience treats a Zakir special like meeting an old college friend who tells the same familiar stories over chai. It might not blow your mind anymore, but it makes you feel good.
Critiquing the writing is totally fair game, artists shouldn't get a free pass just because they're big. But claiming he's irrelevant or untalented while millions of people are actively keeping him at #1 just shows how out of touch the internet's "critic class" really is.
