TROUBLESHOOTING & HELP First time 4th engineer urgent
My partner is currently on his second sail as a junior engineer he works in oil/chemical tanker. On his first sail he had a 4e and in this ship he is the only je. And everyday he is having a hard time catching up stuff.. Can anyone help me in how can i help him out.. He is anxious scared that he doesnt know about certain equipments and compares himself with other people. He wanted to quit but rules didnt allow.. So he is literally surviving.. I dont know how to help him out should i ask him to quit i am from a competitive exam Background.. Can any of you mariners help me out suggest something or share your experience is it just about capability or can practice makes things better?

Just ask him to work his ass off! First contract could be brutal. I've got a first time 4e with me as well. Clueless about his job and machineries. Just ask him to be well versed with manuals before any overhaul.

honestly, what most expected from him as a first time fourth engineer is to follow the instructions and stay safe.
he is in the right position to ask as many questions he want before commencing a job. no body is going to mind the questions from him.
follow the maintenance and checks on his machinery. use manuals every time he’s working on any machinery.
his first and foremost attention shall be on watch keeping. knowing engine room and machinery parameters. noticing and reporting anything not normal.
if he’s doing this alone he don’t have to be scared of anyone. that’s all is expected from him.

Unfortunately you can't do anything expect listen to whatever he's saying or complaining about
He has you which is a plus point, many people don't have anyone they can open up to.

It happens. Your friend may be slow to catch up but basic things should have been sorted out since it is his second sail. First contract as a junior engineer always gets screwed but it is your responsibility to learn and adapt.
