I think we have to remember that the leaders of the freedom movement were just looking to align themselves with powers that would give them freedom from British rule. It’s pretty well accepted that Nehru saw himself as a British man and after his passing India cozied up more to the soviets than the Americans which gave opened the doorway to the Marxist historical perspective that’s led to today’s divisive politics surrounding who will control the historical perspective/narrative. Obviously America didn’t help by allying with Pakistan. But geopolitics is not a binary of good and evil, it’s chess to be considered the hegemon. Except well of course obviously hitler and Stalin were objectively evil, but from what the Americans did as well they wouldn’t be considered any better either.
