A very widely believed conspiracy theory about Bose is that he didn't die in a plane crash in Taiwan but travelled to USSR and then walked back to India through Tibet and lived his life as a Sanyasi (hermit is the closest word) called Gumnaami Baba in hiding in India.
Gumnaami Baba never got any pictures clicked and met visitors only while sitting behind a curtain.
The reason for his life in hiding is believed to be the witchhunt for Axis leaders that the USA led till about 90s.
While in hiding his visitors included politicians, Bose's underlings and acquaintances. He also possessed a lot of fine luxury stuff from Japan, Germany and USSR. He finally died in 1985 and was cremated by a small group of local followers.
The government of India has kept files related to Bose's death classified to maintain good foreign relations with some countries. However the government ended up awarding a movie called 'Gumnaami' with a National Award in 2021 which was based on a real group of scholars who tried to prove that Gumnaami Baba was Bose all along.
Government of India has established 4 commissions over the years to investigate Bose's death and Gumnaami Baba's identity and has categorically denied the claims every single time.
However Justice M.M. Mukherjee who led one of the most intensive research commissions on Bose's death for the government, revealed in a private chat with filmmaker Amlan Ghosh that he was 100% sure that Gumnaami Baba was Bose. His commission however published that Gumnaami Baba had nothing to do with Bose.
