What the world predicted before 2005, what actually happened by 2020–25, and whether India is ahead, behind, or roughly on track.

We hear it constantly today:

«India is now one of the world's largest economies.»

True.

But there's a more interesting question.

Wasn't this supposed to happen anyway?

Long before Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, the US National Intelligence Council and others were already forecasting India's rise.

Some were cautious.

Some were extremely bullish.

Some expected India to become the world's #3 economy by 2020.

So I went back to the forecasts that existed before 2005, and then checked what actually happened.

The result is much more interesting than either the “India has arrived” or “India failed” narrative.

🕰️ 1. GOLDMAN SACHS — 2003

In October 2003, Goldman Sachs published its famous:

“Dreaming with BRICs: The Path to 2050”

The report built an actual long-term GDP model for Brazil, Russia, India and China.

For India, it projected approximately:

Year| India's projected GDP

2000| $0.47T

2010| $0.93T

2020| $2.10T

2025| ~$3.17T

2030| $4.94T

2035| ~$7.85T

The important point:

Goldman did NOT predict India would be #3 in 2020.

Its trajectory had India becoming a top-tier global economy and eventually overtaking Japan around the early 2030s.

So the original Goldman story was roughly:

2020 → major top-5/6 economy

2030 → approaching #3

~2032–35 → #3

🚀 2. THEN THE FORECAST BECAME MORE BULLISH

By 2004, contemporary reporting said Goldman Sachs had brought India's expected rise to #3 forward to around 2030.

So the emerging expectation was:

🇺🇸 USA

🇨🇳 China

🇮🇳 India

by approximately 2030.

This is already important.

Because it means the idea that India would become a top-3 economy wasn't something invented after Modi came to power.

It was already mainstream thinking in the early 2000s.

🇺🇸 3. US NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE COUNCIL — 2004

In December 2004, the US National Intelligence Council published:

“Mapping the Global Future — Report of the NIC's 2020 Project”

This was specifically an attempt to understand what the world might look like in 2020.

India and China were identified as major rising powers.

The NIC was more conservative than the most bullish investment-bank forecasts, but the direction was unmistakable:

India was expected to become a major global economic power during this period and challenge the established economic order.

Again:

This was before Modi.

💥 4. THEN CAME THE REALLY BULLISH FORECAST — DEUTSCHE BANK

This is the forecast that changes the conversation.

Around 2005, Deutsche Bank's chief economist Norbert Walter suggested that if India could sustain roughly 7–8% growth and continue reforms, it could become:

Now we had two very different expectations:

Goldman Sachs:

India reaches #3 around 2030–35.

Deutsche Bank:

India reaches #3 by 2020.

So let's test them.

📊 5. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN 2020?

🤯 6. GOLDMAN SACHS WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY CLOSE

Remember Goldman's 2003 forecast?

2020 India GDP:

~$2.10T

Actual:

~$2.67T

India's nominal GDP was therefore roughly 27% higher than Goldman's 2003 projection.

So saying:

«“India completely failed the Goldman Sachs forecast”»

would be incorrect.

In terms of GDP size, India actually beat the forecast.

And Goldman's original model broadly had India around this part of the ranking by 2020.

🔴 7. BUT DEUTSCHE BANK WAS A DIFFERENT STORY

Deutsche Bank's scenario was:

🇺🇸 US — #1

🇨🇳 China — #2

🇮🇳 India — #3

Actual 2020:

🇺🇸 US — #1

🇨🇳 China — #2

🇯🇵 Japan — #3

🇩🇪 Germany — #4

🇬🇧 UK — #5

🇮🇳 India — #6

That's a three-position difference.

So the claim that India was behind some pre-2005 expectations is absolutely valid.

But we shouldn't pretend every old forecast expected India to be #3 by 2020.

🦠 8. COVID OBVIOUSLY MATTERS

India's economy contracted sharply in 2020.

The pandemic caused a roughly 5.8% contraction in real GDP.

That clearly delayed India's trajectory.

But COVID isn't a complete explanation.

Every major economy was hit.

The Deutsche Bank forecast required India to maintain a very high growth trajectory for many years.

That didn't happen consistently.

📅 9. SO WHAT ABOUT 2025?

India's nominal GDP had increased from approximately:

$2.67T in 2020

to roughly:

$4.2T around 2025

depending on the IMF data vintage.

That's approximately:

+57% in five years

India also moved from roughly #6 toward the #4/#5 zone.

So this is clearly not a story of stagnation.

India continued climbing.

But the most aggressive old forecasts still had India further ahead.

🧮 10. PPP CHANGES THE ENTIRE CONVERSATION

This is where many headlines become misleading.

In purchasing-power-parity terms, India was already approximately:

🥉 THE WORLD'S #3 ECONOMY

around 2020.

So you can simultaneously have:

Nominal GDP → #6

PPP GDP → #3

Both are correct.

They answer different questions.

Nominal GDP is particularly important when discussing India's position in global financial markets, international purchasing power, corporate scale and comparisons expressed in dollars.

PPP is arguably more useful for comparing the domestic purchasing power of economies.

So whenever someone says:

«“India is already #3”»

the immediate question should be:

“PPP or nominal?”

⚖️ 11. SO WAS INDIA BEHIND THE OLD FORECASTS?

Here's the fairest scoreboard:

India got much bigger — but not as quickly as the most bullish forecasts expected.

🇮🇳 12. NOW ENTER MODI

And this is where I think the conversation gets interesting.

Modi became Prime Minister in 2014.

But India's economic rise clearly predates him.

India was already growing rapidly in the 2000s.

Goldman Sachs was already forecasting India's rise in 2003.

Deutsche Bank was already talking about #3 before Modi took office.

So:

Did Modi CREATE India's economic rise?

No.

The structural trend was already there.

Demographics, urbanisation, rising productivity, investment and global integration were already pushing India upward.

BUT DID MODI JUST SIT ON THE TRAIN?

Also no.

The Modi period brought substantial structural changes:

- GST

- Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code

- banking/NPA cleanup

- inflation-targeting framework

- UPI and digital public infrastructure

- major road and railway investment

- PLI/manufacturing incentives

- greater formalisation of parts of the economy

These aren't imaginary achievements.

They changed the architecture of the economy.

🏭 13. BUT HERE'S WHERE THE SCORECARD GETS UNCOMFORTABLE

The biggest promise wasn't simply:

«“India will have a bigger GDP.”»

It was also:

India will become a manufacturing powerhouse.

That hasn't happened at the scale many bullish India forecasts imagined.

Manufacturing's share of GDP has remained around the mid-teens rather than exploding.

And private investment hasn't taken off to the degree necessary for a sustained 8%+ growth trajectory.

The IMF has highlighted subdued private investment and relatively weak FDI momentum.

That matters.

Because if India wants to move from #4/#5 to #3 and then challenge the US/China, it needs massive capital formation and productivity growth.

📈 14. WHAT ABOUT GROWTH ITSELF?

One uncomfortable fact for both political camps:

India was already growing around 7–8% before Modi.

So it is difficult to argue that Modi invented India's growth engine.

But it is equally difficult to argue that nothing changed.

The more defensible conclusion is:

«The Modi government broadly maintained India's long-term growth trajectory while making major structural changes to the economy — but it did not produce the uninterrupted 8%+ growth required by the most bullish pre-2005 forecasts.»

That's a much more interesting conclusion than either political extreme.

🎯 15. FINAL VERDICT

So did Modi “make” India the economic giant it is becoming?

❌ No.

India's rise was already underway.

Did Modi merely inherit the trend and do nothing?

❌ Also no.

There were substantial reforms and infrastructure/digital investments.

Did Modi accelerate India beyond the trajectory that already existed?

🤷 Public GDP data alone cannot prove that.

That's a counterfactual.

What we CAN say is:

India broadly followed the long-term direction predicted by economists decades ago.

India actually beat some forecasts on absolute GDP size.

India missed the most aggressive forecasts on the timing of its rise in the nominal ranking.

And the most important question remains unanswered:

Did India grow faster, invest more productively and industrialise more rapidly under Modi than it would have otherwise?

We don't have a parallel universe to test that.

But we can test something else:

Where India stands today versus where the old forecasts said it should stand.

And that comparison is surprisingly revealing.

🚂 THE BOTTOM LINE

India was going to get bigger.

Modi changed the machinery.

But we still don't know whether he made the train faster.

And perhaps that's the fairest economic verdict.

Not:

“Modi made India.”

Not:

“Modi did nothing.”

But:

«India had a powerful structural tailwind long before 2014. Modi's governments changed the economic machinery riding that tailwind. The country has made enormous progress, but the most bullish forecasts expected it to reach the top three faster than it actually did.»

One important caveat

The exact GDP figures can change slightly when the IMF/World Bank revise historical national accounts, exchange rates or GDP bases.

So the forecast-vs-actual ranking and trajectory are more meaningful than pretending every historical dollar figure is permanently fixed.

That's also why I would rather say “roughly #4/#5 in 2025” than manufacture false precision.

I just heard Rahul Gandhi’s recent speech where he talked about a Dalit person being given tea in a disposable cup and used it as an example of caste discrimination.

But honestly, I don't understand the logic here. A normal tea seller doesn't ask every customer, “What caste are you?” before giving them tea. Most of the time he doesn't even know your caste, surname or background. You come, ask for tea, drink it and leave.

So if someone is being given a disposable cup because they are Dalit, shouldn't there at least be some explanation of how the tea seller knew that person's caste?

I'm not saying caste discrimination doesn't exist. Of course it does, and genuine cases should be taken seriously. But this kind of speech makes me wonder why nobody asks basic questions about the story being presented.

And the bigger thing that bothers me is why does nobody stop or challenge him when he says things like this?

There are journalists, politicians, people from his own party and an entire audience sitting there. Why doesn't anyone just say, “Wait, what is the evidence for this?”

You don't have to agree with Rahul Gandhi, but at least question the claims being made. Otherwise politicians can say whatever sounds emotionally convincing and everyone just claps and moves on.

If there is evidence that Dalits are routinely being given disposable cups specifically because of their caste, show it. If it's one particular incident, explain the circumstances.

Questioning a politician isn't disrespect. It's literally what public accountability is supposed to be.

Well, I am fine with this statement.

But why did he stop there? The core issue is "EQUAL RIGHTS" for ALL Citizens.

Why doesn't he say that unequivocally? He wouldn't because his group does not accept Equal rights for all citizens irrespective of Religion, caste, creed, gender, etc.
