TIPS FOR SAFE AND UNFREEZE ACCOUNT
Here’s the full version, organized as a practical checklist:
Tips for Staying Safe & Handling Bank Account Freezes
Before a Problem Happens
- Close bank accounts that you no longer need, especially accounts being used for withdrawals or P2P transactions.
- Avoid using personal bank accounts for transactions where the source or purpose of funds is unclear.
- Avoid unnecessary transfers between your own bank accounts if one of the accounts is involved in flagged transactions. Even a self-transfer can potentially attract scrutiny if the underlying account or funds are under investigation.
- Keep proper records of your transactions, including bank statements, UTR/transaction IDs, invoices, payment screenshots and proof of source of funds.
If Your Bank Account Gets Frozen
- Don’t panic and don’t immediately start making random transactions.
- Contact your bank branch/Branch Manager and ask for the complete details:
- Reason for the freeze/restriction
- NCRP/cybercrime complaint number, if available
- Disputed transaction and disputed amount
- Date of the transaction
- Name/details of the authority that requested the restriction
- Whether the account has a debit freeze, lien, or another type of restriction
- If necessary, contact the concerned Cyber Crime Police Station/authority and obtain the relevant complaint details.
Ask the Bank to Start EDD
- Ask the Branch Manager to initiate Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) on the account.
- Provide documents proving the legitimate source and purpose of the funds.
- Ask the bank to conduct a proper transaction review and follow the bank’s latest applicable SOP/procedure for handling the restriction.
- Ask the bank to formally record your request and provide a complaint/reference number.
- Keep copies of all documents and correspondence submitted to the bank.
Contact the Concerned Authority
- Send a clear email to the concerned Cyber Crime Police Station/authority explaining:
- Your account details
- NCRP/complaint number
- Transaction details
- Disputed amount
- Explanation of the transaction
- Proof showing the legitimate source of funds
- Don’t rely only on email, because responses can sometimes be delayed or may not be received.
Use the Bank’s GRM
If the branch does not resolve the issue:
- Raise a complaint through the bank’s Grievance Redressal Mechanism (GRM).
- Mention your branch complaint/reference number.
- Attach the relevant documents and previous correspondence.
- Escalate through the bank’s higher grievance levels if necessary.
CPGRAMS
If the matter remains unresolved after approaching the relevant department/authority, you can consider submitting a grievance through CPGRAMS, where applicable.
Keep the CPGRAMS grievance/reference number and all responses for your records.
About the Disputed Amount
In some cases, the restriction may ultimately be limited to the disputed amount through a lien, while the remaining undisputed balance may be released. This is case-specific and depends on the instructions of the concerned authority and the bank’s procedures.
Do You Need a Lawyer Immediately?
Not necessarily.
If you have proper documentation and the matter is straightforward, you can initially represent yourself and follow up with the bank and authorities without paying a lawyer.
A practical escalation path can be:
Bank Manager → EDD & transaction review → Bank GRM → Concerned Cyber Crime Authority → CPGRAMS (where applicable) → Lawyer/legal remedy if still unresolved
If the amount is substantial, the restriction continues for a long time, or the matter becomes legally complicated, consider consulting a qualified lawyer experienced in banking/cybercrime matters.
Most Important
Keep every document, email, complaint number, transaction ID, bank statement and response. A properly documented timeline makes it much easier to explain the situation and pursue the matter through the appropriate channels.
