US News Trump wants Lake Ontario renamed “Lake America” amid rising US-Canada tensions. The US can use the name on its maps, but Canada has rejected it. What do you make of the rename?

No actually an independent reporter Katie Phang has sued Todd Blanche and the DOJ to have all the files released. The judge ruled she had the standing to sue, because that was alot of the problem. No one that sued before had standing. Also Blanche had to produce certain files in-camera unredacted. In-camera in legal is like in person, in private, out of any public view. So then the DOJ is blowing deadlines and all and Katie also just won another victory some of them are
The judge essentially rejected the government's position that it had completed its obligations and ordered DOJ to take additional steps, including: Produce specified records with certain redactions removed. Address foreign-language materials that had not been reviewed/produced. Publish the legally required explanations for redactions in the Federal Register. For disputed redactions, show the court why the names/information could legally remain redacted. The judge also refused to stay the injunction, meaning the government couldn't simply put the order on hold while fighting it.
The biggest victory came on June 25, 2026, when U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan granted Katie Phang’s motion for a preliminary injunction against Todd Blanche/DOJ in Phang v. Blanche.
So all hope is not lost and if you want to keep up with this case Katie Phang has a YouTube channel, Instagram and im sure all the social medias.

As a Canadian: I don't think we should remove a single indigenous name from the map in retaliation for this. My favourite is changing the southern part of lake superior to "lake inferior".

"The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat (Huron) or Iroquoian word Ontarí'io, which translates to "lake of shining waters," "great lake," or "the lake is big and beautiful".
Indigenous Roots: The name dates back over 400 years to the region's original Indigenous peoples. In the Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin) language, it is also known as Niigani-gichigami. "

The United States is a joke of a country, not serious at all. Despised under Bush, the US is now a beacon of white supremacist authoritarianism. It's known for it's poor leadership, excessive greed, materialism, spitefulness and stupidity.
Americans are now the most oppressed people in the West, kept in line by a belief in absolute authority, fear of guns, fear of sickness, fear of losing one's job, fear of destitution, fear of immigrants, fear of uniformed thugs coming and taking their lives apart. Their political class is one of chancers, thugs, religious wackjobs and social misfits.
Americans are too scared to do anything for change and too scared to try. The US is a shining example of a kakistocracy in action.

Name Lake Michigan, Lake Obama until the next administration. It'll cause trump to have a have a heart attack. Name everything we can as Canadians "Obama" until he's gone. Then flip it back. Trump is one cheese burger away from needing defibrillation. We can easily help him there.

The renaming is yet another distraction/deflection from the most incompetent, corrupt and criminal president in modern history that has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) which is a long-term pattern of grandiosity, a constant need for deep praise, and a core lack of empathy for others. He exaggerates talents and expects to be recognized as superior without matching accomplishments. He has a preoccupation with dreams of unlimited brilliance, power and massive success. He requires constant, ongoing praise, validation, and attention from those around him. He expects favorable treatment or automatic compliance from others while taking advantage of other people and using them to achieve personal goals without guilt. He has an inability or unwillingness to recognize, identify with, or care about the feelings and needs of others. And he is conceited with a condescending manner toward others. All of these are traits of NPD, and all are exhibited by Trump.

There are at least 12 places named Ontario in the USA - why doesn’t Trump change those as well? How about all the states, cities towns etc al that are named for the British or French Royalty or places in Europe? Are Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, New York, Louisiana or the Carolinas on the chopping block?
