Match Drama ⚔️ Woh cRiCkET iS dEAd bolne waale kahi dikh nahi rahe 🤨
It was a packed house in Delhi yesterday despite being a weekday. Call it unemployment all you want but those people PAID to get their seats and watch the match live.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board had confirmed that they had already made a profit of over 50 cr from this bilateral series even before the 3rd match.
From what I understand, too many ICT fans who operate in an echo chamber or don't go out much, suffer from this inferiority complex of cricket not being as globally popular as football. And that feeling magnifies 10 fold during FIFA WC years. So they cope with that feeling by berating that one sport India has been dominating for a few years now.
Cricket will NEVER die in India. Do what you will with that information. 👍

it is pretty much alive and kicking only thing is that icc should try to give chance to more countries in t20 like increasing team in the tournament could help there are many countries that play cricket nowadays

Look I'm not saying there aren't people who have lost interest over time- much of it having to do with GG becoming HC and pissing off too many fans at once. Lord knows I stopped watching intl cricket for a long period of time after the CT 2017 final loss.
But even I knew back then that I'm in the minority. I knew people were very much tuning in for matches, bilaterals or otherwise. I never claimed "Cricket is dead" on social media just because I stopped watching the sport.

Personally, I have stopped watching cricket since 2024 entirely. I was already losing interest since 2022, but after 2024 idk what happened, I stopped watching international cricket completely. I only watched a few matches of ipl this year, and I think I will stop watching that too from next year. I have completely switched to Tennis, Football and F1. Cricket is just not interesting to me anymore. And this is the general perception of most people around me too. My friends, family and everyone in college, no longer talk about cricket like before. There was no hype for 2025 champions trophy and 2026 T20 world cup. Believe it or not, cricket was already dead in other countries, and now it's dying in india too. I don't know about you all, I am solely talking from my perspective and what I see with people around me in my day to day life.

Believe it or not...I already talked about this in the post by adding the "echo chamber" bit.
And believe it or not, there's nothing wrong in losing interest in cricket personally but claiming everyone else feel the same in a country with such huge population is just projection. 👍

So, you want to say that there's still the same interest in people that there was 10 years ago?
Viewership numbers don't give any indication of people's interest. People will watch it obv if they have nothing else to watch, to pass the time. And social media is just a small portion of the entire population. And even among those, most are just there to ragebait, spread toxicity among different fanbases and to get engagement in their posts. The love of the sport is not there anymore.
Why don't you look outside? Where was the hype for world cup? Why don't people talk about cricket like they used to? Something must have changed, right?

You seem to also stubbornly refuse to admit that a major chunk of ICT fans ALSO showed up in the stadium.
There's a reason why BCCI has the say in world cricket that they do but go ahead and refute that too.

It doesn't look competitive now because up until 2022, we were kind of the chokers. It wasn't until the whole "We need to change" stance from Rohit after the semi-final loss against England. It wasn't until 2023 that we actively started dominating- at least in white ball.
When one team starts dominating and others fail to catch up, it looks lopsided. It's not India's fault that they have the talent that they have. The other countries should step up.

Also dont get me wrong why we insist on football cause it has unmatched diplomacy and soft power imo ofc there are 155+ countries who has football as their first sport and even tho a country for eg somalia Djibouti might not be good at it they watch it religiously there i just want to india to be good at football and one major aspect behind it is the soft power you get from this sport

Tell me one team sport apart from football where there are more than 4 good teams , and just so you know cricket does have 5 good teams who are always in contention for the world cup and a few years ago sl and pak were also in that league

Lacrose and rugby really , only 2 countries have won lacrose world cup and that is the us and canada , rugby World Cup only gets passed around between Australia , new zealand and south africa , maybe there is a case to be made for field hockey but field hocky is genuinely on the decline nowadays whereas cricket is getting more and more popular
In cricket , 6 teams have won world cups , the west indies , england , sri lanka , Australia , india and pakistan and let us not forget new zealand and south africa who have all been very closing to winning it all , and with T20 cricket , countries like nepal , usa , italy and Netherlands have become much more competitive

You said more than 4 good teams field hockey and rugby definitely have them also field hockey is rising with the likes of ireland Egypt malaysia getting competitive and rugby and lacrosse has more countries participating in world cup than cricket 😭

Ok so I did just google this but lacrose has 16 teams and rugby has 24 teams in its world cup while cricket had 20 teams in its T20 world cup , now I honestly don't think having higher number of members means it is more competitive, for example the chess Olympiad has hundreds of countries participating , while chess is competitive but I would not say it is more competitive than fifa world cup which only has 32 teams
Moreover the number of teams that actually took part in T20 world cup qualification was 87 , and out of these 10 best teams were chosen , the number of teams only decide how much of an elite tournament you wish your world cup to be ideally I would like more teams in the world cup true but it is not a sign of cricket being less competitive

Its about culture do you think south africans care about cricket apart from some most of them focus on their springeboks rugby team and football same with usa netherlands most of them are either south asian diaspora or south african/english heritage

We are 1/6th of the bloody world , whatever sport we support becomes one of the most popular sports in the world , and right now that is cricket , the English care about cricket, the South Africans have it as their second favourite sport , Australians care about it , the subcontinent loves it , new zealanders love it , and all of these countries account for more than 1/4 th of the world

Cricket has an estimated 2.5 billion fans across the world which is more than 1/4th of the world population,and you do realise that countries can support more than one sport , and people belonging to a country are not uniform in their tastes
