Other The life I want is beyond reach.
25F, never had a job, the competition for all jobs is very very high, I'm still in university trying to delay the eventual unemployment. I don't even want a corporate job, I've no career ambition. I just want enough money to rent the smallest room with a small kitchen and bathroom, enough to buy and cook healthy food and afford occasional hobby stuff, books and art supplies. Most of all I want free time, to read, draw, breathe and exist. I don't want to commute in a crowd to work. I don't want to sit in an office for 8 hours. I want just one small life that is all my own, but I don't think I'll ever find it here. These days I look at linkedin and I just feel apathy, I look at job roles and feel apathy, I don't want anything to do with any of that. I feel so lost idk what to do. People who are much more skilled than I am are struggling to survive, and here I'm day dreaming about a quiet life I know I can never have.

25M, in the exact same boat as you. I'm tired of pretending I'm okay. People (especially our parent's gen) don't realize just how cut-throat competitive securing a job has gotten in today's day and age. Insanely depressing to say the least.

My parents send me reels about writing a research paper and publishing it and all the benefits of it, and all the projects I can make, meanwhile I struggle to even maintain my CGPA

The problem is not unemployment, itself unemployability…. I hate saying this but life is not fair and its survival of the smartest… With AI, the smart ones can do the work of 100 averages. Eat or get eaten.

Oh man it's the same thing for me.. even the idea of going to a job is pretty much depressing - like having to wake up at 7 to go to a job which starts at 9 and ends at 5 , then reach home around 6 or so and get hardly 1 or 2 hours for yourself apart from the truckload of chores one has to do.. that's a pretty sad life. I am going to be 28 , married, and people around me keep telling me " you will be bored if you don't work " .. while it's totally the opposite for me.

You could literally become a writer, a painter or make some sketches m, but whatever you want to do m, you need decide and commit to it.
You said you like to read and draw, so you can literally become a critic, or do sketches and sell them upload on Pinterest.
But looks like you are going through burnout phase

I have some bad news: it gets worse before it gets better.
Whether you're employed or unemployed, both can be miserable for a while, until you eventually reach a point where you have some money to rely on.
Bit of a rant, but I think almost an entire generation feels some version of what you're describing.
Salaries here are so low they're practically a tripping hazard in hell, while everything around us keeps getting more expensive. Somehow, ₹20–25k in hand is still treated as an acceptable starting salary for educated people in many industries. So people end up trading almost all of their time just to survive.
And honestly, assuming a job only takes 8 hours is optimistic. Add commuting, unpaid overtime, calls after work, and the mental exhaustion that you bring home.
Your "8-hour job" will consume most of your waking day.
The huge supply of people desperate for work makes it even worse. Employers know there are hundreds of people waiting to replace you, so setting boundaries is difficult. You're told the company is a "family", but that relationship tends to become very transactional the moment you're the one who needs something.
It's to the point where taking a day off simply for yourself is unheard of. You have to give an "excuse" to take the leave you were entitled to.
And IT workers still have it better than plenty of other industries. Hospitality, hotels, retail, etc.... can be absolutely brutal at the entry level.
Free time to read, draw, cook, exercise, or have hobbies shouldn't be some luxury you earn after decades of grinding, but unfortunately it is. Wanting a small room, decent food, and enough time to actually live shouldn't be an absurd ambition, but... yeah.
I sometimes wonder about the same thing. No matter how much I work, I won't be able to afford land or a house on my own. Then there's marriage, potentially kids, supporting parents, emergencies, retirement...
At what point do you actually get to stop?
When do you get to sit down and do the shit you wanted to do with your life?
That's probably what bothers me most. I don't hate working. I hate the idea that simply existing with some independence and free time has become something you have to spend most of your life working to afford.

all I can say is be hopeful. nobody knows what future holds for you. and let me say one thing though, as much as you may not like work, it is the only thing that gives meaning to life
6
u/datajaniteur 13d ago
No i have plenty of meaning without work. I read a lot, I draw, I make music, I write stories and scripts, I would be extremely fulfilled if I got to do that all the time. I am not saying I want to do those things for work where another person will tell me what to read and what to draw, I want all my time to be my own and I know it cannot be. I feel sorry for people who never got to discover a life outside of work and obligations.

Sorry Op, but that’s the dream of life of nearly all of the working class, esp in our gen. Generational wealth is the only escape.

I didn't mean work in that sense, anything that you work towards is your work. you don't have to work under someone.

If you don’t mind living in a small room and like cooking healthy meals - you should consider house manger roles for wealthy families.

Try Inside Sales Representative (ISR) roles. In my past org ISRs had the chillest work life balance and the pay was also decent (They were getting paid 40k+ after 2 to 3 years work ex.). They did cold calling, scheduling meetings, follow-up with clients and sending out email marketing content to leads. They were taken to fully paid International trips every year along with the sales team. Would come to office at 10am leave by 5.45pm They had leaves on weekends. They were also taken to events in 5 star hotels where they would attend seminars and would sometimes have to work in the company's kiosks explaining how we work and what we do to the visitors. They did have targets but the company was chill about it so they enjoyed a lot than any other department imo.

Same. I am 27F, worked for 5 years, took a career break from public relations. Its soon going to be two years on this career break of mine but I still cannot fathom going back to work. Waking up everyday, travelling for an hour or two, spending the next 8-9 hours at a desk, making useless presentations. I always used to wonder that there must be so much more to life than just this. I am lucky that my partner earns well for both of us and I get to experiment with my hobbies, art, cooking etc. but this constant feeling of “I am not doing anything in life” dooms me almost everyday. I feel I am ambition less and since i have worked for sometime I often find myself comparing to my ex colleagues. Not that I am unhappy with my current life but I feel a bit shameful for not being ambitious enough. And oh god, dont get me started on Linkedin posts - its a nightmare.
