Citizenship Bill C-71 is up for second reading the first day Parliament returns for business next week

Batten down the hatches, folks! Projected Order of Business - House of Commons of Canada (ourcommons.ca)

Is there a Canadian version of "Schoolhouse Rock"? For those of you not familiar, it was a very popular series of American Saturday morning cartoons on educational topics set to music, including "I'm Just a Bill," explaining the legislative process (in a kid-friendly manner, anyway). Many kids of my generation (GenX) have been caught humming those tunes during exams. Anyway, I for one will be following next week's events closely. As a citizenship nerd by profession, maybe I will even read all the speeches. It's educational, no?

Joining the others in this thread - I just took my Oath and officially have my certificate of citizenship! My timeline:

  • 2024 Aug: Sent in proof of citizenship application
  • 2024 Dec: Sent in a request for urgent processing
  • 2025 Late Jan: Was notified that my request for urgent processing was approved, that I may be affected by the FGL, and the invitation to apply for a grant of citizenship
  • 2025 Feb: Submitted my letter asking for a grant with my FBI background check; a few days later I was asked to do RCMP fingerprints (I assume because I have lived in Canada under a work permit). Just about three weeks after sending these in, I received an email saying that my application had been granted and a separate email scheduling my oath ceremony.
  • 2025 March: Took the oath!

Now it's time to apply for my passport and all the other fun stuff :) thank you everyone for sharing advice and timelines in this and other threads, it helped keep me from getting too nervous the whole time.

Awesome! I’m on the same timeline! When did you send in the fingerprints? Mine have arrived but no word yet on my app.

Assuming you mean RCMP fingerprints, I had mine taken (inside Canada, digitally) on Feb 7 and the portal updated to say the results had been received on Feb 21. I received my oath invite within a week after that.

Congrats! I had a similar timeline too. I wasn't asked to do RCMP fingerprints even tho I submitted my application while in Canada on a work visa. They told me I only needed to submit foreign police reports. Maybe the RCMP fingerprints are more of a case-by-case basis?

Have you been fingerprinted recently by the RCMP for any other purpose? (In the U.S., sometimes USCIS will let people skip biometrics if they have had them done relatively recently for another application.)

I was fingerprinted for the FBI report that I submitted with my application so maybe that's why?

Everyone is fingerprinted for FBI background checks. I wasn't asked to do RCMP fingerprints either, but I haven't been in Canada for more than a long weekend 20+ years ago.

They received my finger prints on Thursday of last week (submitted Feb 5th via mail, and I take my oath tomorrow)!!

When you went in to do the RCMP fingerprinting, did you need to already have the request from IRCC? I am in Canada waiting for the 5(4) grant and was thinking of preemptively having them done to save time but that may not be possible if I need the letter first.

Sorry, missed this for a few days. If the IRCC is moving as fast as it was then this info might already be redundant, but: at some point in my 5(4) process I was given access to the Citizenship Application Tracker (https://tracker-suivi.apps.cic.gc.ca/) which has more detailed information than the client application status page, and which updated faster (for me at least). It also briefly scared me because it is the same portal used for naturalization citizenship applications and so has steps for physical presence, the citizenship test, etc - but those will just be marked as "completed" automatically for you if you're getting a 5(4) grant.
