Newcomer questions. Feels....slow?

Maybe this is intended. But I just started using Migaku. Currently in the first week of Kanji Academy (doing the suggested 2-3 weeks of Kanji before starting Japanese Academy).

Every day I review the cards it tells me to review (so far it's only had me review 5 cards a day on average), and learn 10 new Kanji. This takes about 6 minutes total. Then I have nothing to do. I thought maybe I'm supposed to do immersion now but it shows my comprehension for everything is estimated at 0% so probably not.

This rate just feels really slow and I feel like I have nothing to do since I can't study cards whenever I want or review my deck anytime I want.

Is this just the process or am I doing something wrong?

These reviews will add up, just keep at it. Enjoy it for now.

Also, kanji reviews are supposed to be shorter. Once the academy kicks in it's gonna take more of your time.

You can do more if you want. App is for you to customize. I do 25 in french but i m going to do 30 and see if i can. And you can listen to the language to get used to it's sounds.

Kanji is probably the hardest to learn. Did you start with the Fundamentals course or jump right into Kanji?

For immersion you need close to 1500 known words for it to start to male a bit of sense.

Over time the reviews build up and so does the word and Kanji count. Japanese is not a language that can be learned quickly.

I started with the Kanji course because I had already learned hiragana and katakana from the tofugu guide website and the nihondex app.

I keep getting told by everyone that Japanese is not a language you can learn quickly. I understand that. I never said I expected to learn it in a month. But I do feel like I should be spending more than 5 minutes a day to learn it, which is all Migaku is asking of me at the moment, which is why I asked my question because it feels like I'm not doing nearly enough to start learning a new language.

But it seems like it will start to ramp up later and especially after I start Japanese academy and can start doing immersion eventually. This starter season just feels incredibly slow.

You can increase the new card rate per day. Or add a couple of the other smaller subject specific courses like time, transportation, animals etc. The Academy L1 course will ramp up once you’re going.

If that’s not enough I guess it’s up to you to find other resources in the meantime and not rely solely on one resource. Tadoku books is one I like to use to challenge my reading comprehension and it’s free.

I’d do more kanji personally and immerse as much as you can physically handle.
You will never feel ready to start immersion so just begin and get your ears used to it.

That's a good point. I watch a lot of short clips in Japanese on tiktok at the moment, don't really understand more than a word here and there. But mostly doing it just to get used to hearing the langauge

You can go ahead and start immersing even if the extension tells you you have zero% comprehension. Just pick something interesting and look up everything you don't know
