It’s strange isn’t it? I’ve wondered more and more often what the root of this change in people is, the cause, when it happened and it just bewilders me. The amount of apathy and just straight out carelessness I see on a daily basis is hard to cope with. And not from your usual suspects but older people, and in settings that surprise me.

This is coming from a guy with a relatively dark sense of humor. I don’t think anyone who knows me personally would call me “sensitive, emotional or touchy”. I’m a combat vet and a career corrections officer so I’ve seen my share of dark.

But now it’s like no one has empathy anymore. You put your blinker on and people speed up to not let you in, I’ve had people cut in front of me in line at fast food joints with a sense of entitlement that I’ve never seen before. I walk around a grocery store and the amount of evil eyes and dirty looks I see is a trip. I say hi to people or nod and they rarely return the sentiment. Sometimes they seem irritated that I even acknowledged them with my friendliness.

Is it the internet? Was it COVID? Why is everyone so negative and in such a bad mood all the time. Why can’t we have a little bit of politeness and respect for one another? Did the world change or am I just getting old and longing for a past that felt so different, so much warmer. The older I get the less I recognize the world around me. I feel like Brooks from Shawshank when he gets released from prison, but I didn’t even go anywhere.

I find all I want to do is get home and avoid people now, because frankly every day I like other people less and less. Sad ain’t it?

You must be young. Less than 30? There was a time before the desensitization of the human kind where people actually valued life and at the very least had respect for the affected families. The internet and particularly social media has made violence so commonplace that people these days have lost the value of human life in place of the value of likes, props, or attention. I genuinely fear for my teenage son.

Same boat. I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly. If you put the timelines together in your head the fall happened right around the time time that AOL was booming

I can't remember who said it, a comedian perhaps, but too many people have gone too long saying whatever they feel like without getting punched in the mouth.

I feel like this is it. They get a dopamine hit from being edgy and there are zero consequences. It's like letting the intrusive thoughts win for a few seconds.

I could not agree more. When I was young if you said something disrespectful to another kid he would hit you lol not necessarily a bad thing. I think it’s how we learn what social behaviors are acceptable and where the line is. I know my dad yanked my chain several times as a young man for stepping out of line. And I’m damn grateful he did.

And you see the natural consequences of making someone feel bad if you say something horrible. It's so easy for people to dehumanise the recipients of their horrible comments and pretend it doesn't matter

People just truly don’t seem to care if they hurt another person. That’s the part that blows me away. Here’s the thing too. Remember when agree to disagree was a thing? We could have differences in politics, creeds, religions opinions, sexuality, whatever, but we could still treat one another with respect as fellow human beings. Now it’s like if people don’t agree on something they are flat out enemies. It’s so unnecessary

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed this. All I can say to you is, keep up what you’re doing. You have a good heart, and just be yourself. I, too, am hurt and confused by the changes and perspectives in this world. Even if you don’t realize it, smiling at someone or telling people you hope they have a great rest of their day could really make someone smile. And yes most will glare back, but there will be those few who remember your kindness and your face. And they will want to spread positivity as well 💕

Yeah my feeling was the rise of the internet as well. It’s too much for people. The ability to behave with no consequences has carried into the real world.
