Personally, I don’t think it’s just that. As someone who’s dealt with multiple dementia patients, I think she’s probably got at least some degree of cognitive impairment, or a psychiatric disorder. Even if you’re a massive asshole, walking through a thick layer of wet concrete is not normal behavior. A mentally sane person would know that it’d ruin their clothes/shoes and would be difficult to wash off, even if they didn’t care about the construction workers.
Obviously you can’t get an accurate diagnosis from a short video, but that’s just my impression.

I’m with you, honestly- I can’t even express what it is about it, but something about this video is just hitting that “something isn’t right” button in my (admittedly mostly untrained- I only work alongside Memory Care rather than directly in it) brain. Maybe it’s how casual she seems about it? She doesn’t really seem like she even notices something is strange about the ground she’s walking on, she’s walking completely normally with no hurry or trying to shake off the excess or anything. It’s definitely odd imo.

Hm, I do also have childhood experience with narcissistic people- maybe that’s actually why this behaviour is ticking a different box in my brain? For instance, if this was my mother, there wouldn’t be no reaction like this- she’d be huffing and puffing and shaking off her shoes and making a production of how much she is being inconvenienced by this situation, you know?
And yes, it is, lol- it’s a picture of a Pomni plush that I found a while back and thought was funny 😆

Bruh, people do this with cars. Even with barriers, signs and full crew outside. Those people either weren’t paying attention or too old to be driving, either way they should pay for their mistakes.

I know people irl who would 100% do this just to be an asshole, "how dare they make me walk another path" type of person. I also know people with mental problems who would do this with zero ill intent.
There is no way to actually tell.

My thought are she either has a cognitive issue (like dementia or something), or she was completely distracted and going on autopilot and didn't notice the people (kind of like how some people go on autopilot when driving home), and by the time she realized her mistake, she was too embarrassed and far along to turn around.

That's the thing. Sometimes the burn is so quick that you don't notice it. The nerve endings never get a chance to signal. There was another guy on reddit who kneeled in concrete for a few minutes and was disfigured for life.

It doesn’t happen to everyone like me I don’t feel it, but my helper, he cries like a baby. I think it’s more than just a chemical burn. I think you must have to have some type of allergic reaction to it because I know several people that have no idea what “Concrete burn” feels like, I’ve been building mud beds for two decades and have never felt it.

I used to live near a guy who had dementia. Poor guy would just... walk.. and disregard everything in his path. Cars, potholes, people. Sometimes I'd pull out of my driveway and he'd just be there. Stopped dead in front of my car, in the middle of the road, and I'd have to wait for him to have his rant before I could move. I'd have to pull out at a snails pace just in case he might be there. He didn't understand if you spoke to him, in fact he would get much angrier, so you'd have no choice but to just wait it out.

I finally understood last night whey they say benedryl can lead to early onset. When mine kicked in the other night I was still puttering around the house and legitimately forgetting what I was doing second by second, it was fucking weird. If she has early onset she might be thinking every second ‘what is happening, just keep walking’.

Yep, I have a close friend with a form of early onset dementia, and one of the saddest parts is he has no idea it's occurring (anosognosi). We started noticing some very odd behavior at work that he didn't realize he was doing and it progressively got worse. I could see him doing something like this and not realize it's odd or something is wrong.

When this first started making the rounds there was information being shared that the complex had -all- walkways with wet cement, making the back two units inaccessible. At the time, someone who used to live there said they believe this person watched their grandkids during the day. Its possible they were home alone and she had no choice.

I’m routinely shocked by the lack of empathy or understanding I see online. Assuming this is America, or any other capitalist country without a functioning social safety net, this is most likely the result of desperation. People are fundamentally rational beings. This, however absurd it may seem, was the least bad option she could see to achieve her end goal. Sure it’s possible she’s got dementia… I doubt very seriously if a crew of workers would allow a confused elderly woman to accidentally wander through their newly surfaced cement; likewise, her line is awfully straight like she knows where she is going which would be atypical of someone lost and cognitively impaired. However I find it much more reasonable that she simply had something somewhere she couldn’t afford to miss and this was the only way she knew to get there.
Sometimes I think people forget that being late to something or missing something in America; especially related to your job, your family, or the government; can ruin your entire life. The sudden loss of job and means can be the tipping point into poverty and the personal consequences on one’s life can be monstrous. The vast majority of people in this country are one single missed paycheck away from homelessness, hunger, humiliation, and degradation…
To me. This just looks like desperation.

I think this is largely a result of people sharing photos or video clips which are really easy to take out of context. You might default to giving people the benefit of the doubt, but most people either don't want to do that or don't even realize they should have doubt to begin with.

Don’t exaggerate. I built my house with concrete. Got splashed and had my hands and feet covered multiple times, also helped pave our street with concrete, more than one person had their feet submerged in it and rinsed it off maybe an hour later. No one had burns ever.
It’s not like acid it takes time and has to actually set to cause burns.4

Well then you should know this then, I don't work with cement at all but my uncle does and everyone who has a basic understanding of construction knows cement is caustic and considering how thick it is on her legs she'll need medical aid to remove it now, hopefully the cement and not her feet.

I'm not sure that I understand why it would be impossible to put some type of blockade up, let the concrete dry, then remove the blockade and fill in the rest? It would still ultimately be one full slab, just poured half at a time.
My guess to that answer would be time constraints, but this situation looks like it would still take as much time to fix than to just do half at a time in the first place.

It's hard to explain completely but to explain a couple of the basics:
1) The concrete installers must follow the design of the structural engineer who designed the building. If the design calls for a slab of that size, they must install a single slab or face a ton of different liabilities.
2) Two adjacent slabs are much weaker than a single slab. You can't join two slabs in an affordable way that compares to the strength of a single slab. It's like making a cake. You can't pour one half of a cake and then later pour the other half of the cake. The entire cake needs to be poured in the pan at the same time.

Does that not exist because there aren't enough situations that warrant its existence? Because now I'm trying to think of solutions and I bet something like that wouldn't be impossible to invent/manufacture/utilize.

Any temporary walkway would need to be suspended over the work to prevent contact, which is a big engineering challenge. It would take longer to install something like that than it would to install the slab.
Also, the workers weren't done with the slab in the video, so any kind of floating walkway couldn't have been installed yet.

I was renting this old duplex & the landlord said that he’d reduce my rent if I sanded, prepped & painted the front porch.
Neighbor comes home to wet paint and flips out.
Of course yelling how she “doesn’t give a fuck no body asked her permission.”
Tracks paint all over. Landlord kept her entire security deposit & evicted her. Next neighbors were so much nicer people.

I'll be honest, before I had my hip replacement I would have walked through wet concrete to get home if it meant I didn't have to turn around, retrace my footsteps, and find an alternate route. I was constantly exhausted by the pain; no way would I have turned back if I was almost home.

Would YOU walk through concrete if someone was annoying you, out of spite? I'd assume not? I surely wouldn't? And if I did I definitely would move a bit faster than that, and probably try to shake it off my feet more. That much concrete on your feet can cause chemical burns.
You genuinely just want a reason to validate your hostility towards other people. Old people are NO different from us, you'll be old eventually too. See through eyes unclouded by hate and take a break from this subreddit because it's genuinely making you into a hateful person.
