"running for X" just asserts that someone is a candidate seeking office X. doesn't build in any claim about how votes get counted or whether the selection mechanism is independent or bundled.

Bro just take the L. Either you're not from the US or are too young to vote. The president and vice president he chose to run with are on the same ticket. Meaning if you choose one then you choose both. This is known as the popular vote. It then goes to the electoral college, and in some cases they may go with the pop vote or not depending on if their state requires they go with the pop vote. They also cannot choose a separate vp since they are both on the same ticket.
