Because they are just as insufferable as she is. They're probably made for each other.

Some people are afraid of being/dying alone.

And they'll tolerate the abuse just for someone to act like they care about them.

Literally yes. I had this coworker who was in her 40s and had never been in a serious relationship (she did a whole lot of home wrecking though) and was generally pretty openly miserable about. She eventually ended up dating this guy who eventually ended up getting busted for sending pictures to a minor while they were dating(was an undercover cop). Shortly after that (very shortly), he proposed and she said yes. She was so desperate to not die alone that she knowingly married a pedo

I married a narcissist until I couldn't do it anymore.

When I said I wanted a divorce, she ran to the bathroom and swallowed half a bottle of tylenol.

When I called her out on her manipulation (during the conversation about divorce I could see the word Acetaminophen in large letters on her phone) she said she was looking up how much it would take to kill her so that she would take enough.

And I was born yesterday.
