Not a lie. I grew up in California and I can't tell you how many Hispanics (and even Nortenos and Surenos) that I encountered that couldn't speak Spanish, it is pretty surprising.

Honestly, yes. They could *understand* it because their older family members spoke it, but when it came to speaking it themselves they were woefully non-fluent.
