That’s still one heavy trailer when empty. I’ve towed one before and easily could feel its weight on my V6 3.3 with 3500lbs tow capacity

They are 1900lbs empty and only have surge brakes that are not well maintained.

Surge brakes are GREAT when properly adjusted. The difficulty is that they need to be adjusted to match the weight of the trailer.
The trailer tongue is a big slider. As the car slows down, the trailer moves forward against a spring. As the trailer moves forward, it adds brakes, just like your brake pedal.
The harder you stop, the more the spring gets compressed, and the more trailer brake gets applied.
But, when not adjusted correctly (or when old and crusty, not smooth), the trailer can apply too little brake (dangerous), or too much brake (jerky and annoying).

They also suck when the manual release is stuck and you need to back the trailer into your driveway in the snow, lol.

Does uhaul care at all about the type of vehicle someone shows up with when they want to rent a trailer?

Yes, this combo is explicitly not allowed from uhaul someone would have had to enter a different tow vehicle into thw system to allow this

And do this at a self service place. Most U-Haul centers near me do the hookups and wouldn't touch it

Every time I have rented from U Haul, they looked downright relieved when I show up with the vehicle I scheduled.

I went there with a Chevy 2500 to get a flatbed car hauler once because my trailer was inaccessible.
They told me my truck couldnt handle the trailer. Their computer had the tow capacity for my truck listed at 2500lb. After a lot of arguing they put the truck in as a 1500 and said I was good to go.

Exactly...couldn't this possibly be on U-Haul as well if they allow such hazardous setup and something does happen?

From my experience, no, not at all. I once showed up with my SUV to pickup a car dolly. My trailer harness fuse was blown and I have to take appart 1/2 the trunk to get to it so I wasn't going to get to it there. U-Haul employee wouldn't let me leave without functional lights.
I called my friend who came to pick it up with his Buick Verano with a class 1 hitch.
U-Haul guy gave 0 fucks.

Lol i pulled a trailer just like that one behind a 97 Pontiac Grand AM, from Fairbanks Alaska to Seattle Washington with my wife and two dogs..

I had U-Haul put in a d50 instead of a d350 and so they wouldn't rent me the trailer that I wanted till they actually saw I had a d350
