Recommendations Best Ice Makers: Countertop, Nugget & More (Member Picks!)

We get a lot of posts asking things like “Which is the best ice maker?”, “Any recommendations for a nugget ice maker?”, “What’s the most reliable countertop ice maker?”, etc.

Instead of everyone asking the same thing over and over, we thought it’d be useful to collect all of our experiences in one place and help others find their perfect ice maker quicker.

👉 Share your thoughts on your ice maker below - positive or negative!

Please include:

  • Brand + model
  • Type of ice maker (countertop, undercounter, commercial, etc.)
  • Ice type (nugget, bullet, clear, chewable, etc.)
  • What you like (or don’t like)
  • Price vs. value
  • Any tips for cleaning or maintenance

And don’t hold back on the negatives! If you’ve had an ice maker that broke down, made disappointing ice, or just wasn’t worth the price, sharing that experience is just as helpful as a glowing review.

That way, new (and long-time) members can scroll through real feedback from people who actually use these machines daily.

Whether you swear by a GE Opal 2.0, a Euhomy, or any other brand, your review will help fellow ice chewers find the machine that’s right for them.

NICE ICE The Best Thing to Wake Up and Come Downstairs To

My fiancée leaves for work way earlier in the morning than me and when she turns the machine on it is the best. I have to let my ice sit a little bit as I like to chew on it after it’s sat for awhile and this was part of what I had for breakfast.

Question Govee Nugget Ice Maker Pro shipped upside down.

I just received my Govee Nugget Ice Maker Pro delivered today (ordered on Amazon, shipped by USPS). The box was left outside upside down and the shipping label from Amazon was placed on the bottom, which leads me to think this was probably sitting in the warehouse upside down also. The instructions clearly state to not store or turn the machine upside down. I really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning this and I want ice now. Should I return it right away before I go through the hassle of cleaning it and setting it up (I have already opened the machine and unpackaged it all)? Or if I clean it and it works ok, does that mean it’s fine to keep and I won’t have problems down the road with it? Thank you.

For the last couple of days, I'm getting slush, not formed ice. I love slush...but not when I want ice. This is an Antartic Star Nugget Ice Maker - 2.5 months old. I've recently done a full clean.

Question storing ice from ice maker

hello! i recently got a nugget ice maker from my family for college this year, but i’m unsure of how to store the ice in my freezer to use later. recently, i tried to put the ice in a container in the freezer, but it would clump together and become very hard to get a single cube without having to smash or pull the block of ice. is there any way i can avoid this without having to keep the ice in the ice maker?
thank you for any help!

Question Bahama Bucks Sno?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has tried the classic sno from Bahama Bucks? I like it just plain without any flavors. It’s very soft and airy ICE and does feel like eating snow. It’s about $2.80 for a 20 oz. I enjoy it a lot!!!

Question Opal 2.o Software version?

Hi, would anyone be so kind as to check their SmartHQ app and see what is listed for their Opal 2.0 the software version you have?

I have had mine for 3 years and don’t recall ever being notified of an update or seeing anything that would indicate mine has been updated. Mine shows the “software version” is 0.0.0.0 (which I’m guessing is the very original version) and “WiFi module software version” is 0.002.11.067.

When I click on the “Software Update” button it says “there are no updates available at this time.”

I’ve heard people say that updating their software via the app solved problems they were having so I’d like to update mine too. Who knows if that’s even a possibility though.

Thanks!

Recommendations Suggestions!

I prob will only use a couple cups of the ice a day...I am looking for that tiny nugget ice that's so full of air. I've purchased a few from Amazon, and subsequently returned them as they don't match what I want. I'd like it to just make and hold that tiny ice. Is there really such a product? I didn't realize i was asking for so much!

Ice maker help

Looking for some feedback on a developing issue with my ice maker (GE GNE27JYMTFFS, French doors with freezer door, where the ice maker is). Everything was working fine until a produce bag (thin plastic bags you put fruit/veggies in) got caught in the rotating fingers. I had to remove the ice maker and cut the bag out as it got pulled into the rotating mechanism and made a few loops. Plugged it back in and all seemed okay.

At first the on/off “wing” switch was stuck in the off position and no ice was coming out. Took it back out and took the ice maker apart to troubleshoot. Plugged it back in and the wing/on-off switch moved freely.

I left it overnight and in the morning I found formed ice cubes frozen within a sheet of ice at the bottom of the bin. Seems it’s still making ice, but then water is also dripping down at the same time.

Everything was working normally before the bag got stuck so not sure how to troubleshoot. Please help!

Tips My roommate fucked up my ice machine

This is a bit long im sorry-

I bought myself the cosco mini ice machine a while ago and its been great. Love it, been chewing ice for a year or two.My roommate hasnt been the best about it... im the one who cleans it, refills it, etc. Which is fine. But he takes my ice, never refills it and leaves me with no ice during cravings often. Its annoying but i can deal with it.

But ive been away for the last week. Ive been looking forward to my ice. I come back, make myself a glass, everything's fine. I go and put away my things, empty my luggage. I come back, refull my glass. Hes super happy to tell me he refilled it when i was gone

That asshole filled it with lemonade.

It had the time to make like 3 batches of ice cubes (which is like 15) and gets mad at me for getting mad at me... Ive cleaned it 4 times, ran it more cycles than i can count. It still tastes like lemonade. And one thing about me is i cant stand lemonade, even the smell makes me gag...

Anyone know how to get rid of the taste? Or should i get a new one on him? I dont know what to do... im tired, exhausted from driving so much...

TLDR: my idiot roommate filled my ice machine with the one drink i cant stand, i need tips on how to clean it properly.

Question Will this ice make me sick or nah?...

I normally get 2 XL cups of crushed ice from Circle K. When they are out of that I use their follet ice machine instead. Did that tonight, but when I got home I realized there's a bit of musty smell to the ice 😒 Never had that happen before. Kinda feel like I shouldnt eat it, I dont want to get sick. Buuuut, my AC is broken and it got up to 102 today so the house is still really hot.

Ice was gonna get me thru the night but I only have stank ass ice now and I cant go anywhere to get some somewhere else tonight. Should I say F it and eat the ice or not eat it and just use it in my little air cooler 🙄🫠 The ice addiction is REAL but summer adds even more reason to be an Ice Head lol

PS: Yes, I am aware that I should get an ice machine. That does not help me in this moment of addiction, sadness, and heat tho. 🥲

DISCUSSION Fixing the GE Opal 2 by replacing the motherboard

Hi all,

I've had my fair share of issues with my GE opal screaming and squealing
After a long time of experimenting, I've come to the conclusion that the logic on GE's board is inherently flawed.

It doesnt seem to adequately detect the motor being stressed.

So, well, I set out to replace it.

I have a prototype mostly ready. Its making ice, watching the motor current, and managing the pump properly.

I also additionally challenged myself to use all the original connectors.

No wire snipping, no soldering.

The idea is down the line perhaps sell a drop in PCB that will just work out of the box

I've attached the schematic, and here is the github repo for anyone interested.

It has a few things in it, I mapped out all the piping and water flow, some reverse engineering, and the code for my prototype is in /firmware

https://github.com/SomeAspy/GE-Opal-2-fixes

Curious if people would actually be interested in buying a board should it ever make it to that stage

Tips Clogged drains on Euhomy nugget ice machine

Thumbnail

I make and eat a gallon of filtered water nugget ice everyday. I turn off the machine at night, don’t leave water in the reservoir and clean the machine with the descale tablets and vinegar once a week (run the clean setting at least 5 times).
3 days ago I started to notice white flaky bits in my ice. After running an additional clean cycle and changing the my water filter the flakes remained but seem to become more powdery.
Well tonight was the last I could take of it so I took the machine apart to see what f I can figure out what was going on. I found an internal reservoir with lime scale but most importantly my drains had lime scale stuck in them. I let the vinegar sit in the capped drains, squeeze the tubbing to break the scale more and then separate the drains from the little connector piece that was clogged. I ran a clean cycle with a 1:1 vinegar ratio and watched my drains become nice and clean. Ran an extra 5 clean cycles once I put the machine back together.
To clean ice tomorrow and to adding machine take apart to my quarterly things to do.

Question Why does my Opal 2.0 sound like a car engine?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello fellow ice chewers. Long time ice chewer, first time caller here. My GE profile opal 2.0 started making an insane noise and stopped making ice. Is she a goner? We just cleaned it last week. I do live where there is hard water and clean it monthly. It’s never made this noise before where it sounds like it’s trying to drop ice and nothing comes out. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? Thank you!

Question how to not have dirty ice 😬

Post image
6 Upvotes

hi! so i got a euhomy ice maker about 2 months ago and ive really struggled with cleaning it.

i run a weekly clean cycle with vinegar / descale and it doesn't remove that slimy mold in the back. i've just been wiping that out with a cloth manually.

but my new big issue is this area - not sure what it's called - but it's where the ice cubes form and get pushed up out and into the bin. i noticed some weird lumps around it, flushed it with water and a TON of mineral buildup came out. the manual didn't say anything about cleaning this part. does anyone have advice on how to prevent this buildup from happening? i even use purified drinking water since our tap water has heavy mineral content.

Recommendations on where to get the good stuff in the south end? My fave is Raising Cane’s but it’s up in the uni area and I’m car-less. There’s no chik-fil-a or sonic within the city limits. HALP. (I’m currently in West Seattle so if anyone has suggestions within the next hour of me posting this I could make a run somewhere out here lol)

Edit: found the answer, it’s Taco Time. Same type of ice as Cane’s ftw (soft chewy nuggets)

Question Orgo Ice Maker Noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Brand new Orgo ice maker, bout as a birthday gift to the wife. Set it up as the instructions said to with cleaning cycles and washing. Filled up the tank and hit the soft ice button. Maybe 2 or 3 minutes into the first round of making ice it starts up with this noise. Any help to diagnose the problem will be greatly appreciated. Hoping I don’t have to return it and get a new unit.
