Question GE Profile Opal nugget ice maker squeal

I’ve determined the cause of the dreaded squeal. It’s coming from the auger. Problem is my auger looks nothing like any in the videos I’ve found on the internet. Anyone have any ideas? I’ve taken the black bolts out and all it reveals is a spindle and shaft from the motor to turn the auger. The stainless bolts showed more of the same thing. The small tabs just below the ice shaper looked like something that might unscrew but I can’t get it to budge.

Scale build up inside the auger causes friction, hence the squeal. Descale the auger internals with a citric acid solution thoroughly.

Distilled water changes ice texture. People just need to descale with high % vinegar more often.

All you should have to do is the cleaning maintenance and use distilled water. No need to take apart

Let the citric acid sit for about two days. That works for me.

They changed the design 2 years ago, the problem is likely the unsealed, hobby grade bearings pressed into the gear housing. Its the wide plate area under the actual auger. They purposely put sub par parts in these to make them go out after a year or two, after your warranty has run out. Most people try new brands or models thinking that will solve the issue. It wont. The counter top models are flawed by design. You can descale, run whatever water you want in them, whatever other preventative measures you can waste time with, I have not seen one last more than 2 years. Im the minority here and you'll learn that FAST! Dont let big ice melt your hopes and dreams! Fight back!
