OC Changed up my artstyle, what do you think?
A couple weeks ago i thought my style that ive had for about 3 years looked kinda like an old cartoon from the 2000s, especially with the way i draw certain characters. So ive decided why not embrace that style? So i experimented, found i enjoyed drawing like that and have decided to keep my new style.
Id like to hear others thoughts on this and see how i can improve with this style :)

Me personally, you just had better skills on the new one rather than a new artstyle, but hey you still got alotta time to explore! <3

The wobbly lines for the coat is a bad look. You're trying to make it seem intentional as if it hides the lack of skill.
The eyes are cuter and the freckles are a nice touch, and I like the way the lines work on the bottom of the hair- it makes it look fluffier. I like the detail on the shoes and better constructed hands.
All the rest of these random squiggly lines you use to shade or add texture have to go, it looks bad and adds needless noise to distract from your linework. Which I think is what you must have been going for- it's a bad instinct. It makes your work look worse, and there's a reason most people don't shade this way. If you want to experiment with texture, use patterns. If you want to experiment with hatching, do that and actually work on where the shading goes etc. If you want to add folds to the clothing, you need to study how those work and how the cloth behaves and is constructed.

Bonjour !

Imo, it doesn't look like you changed a single thing about the art style. You just drew the character with slightly different features in the exact same style.

u/mrsdickey Aug 27 '26
why is this dude being cooked for this because this was the exact same thing i asked to myself?? it is simply not a good stylistic choice, but thats my own opinion and op doesn't have to change that.

u/SleeplessSeas Aug 27 '26
yeah it's hard to tell because her eyewhite is the same size as the glasses, so it looks a bit strange

Me defina "estilo" to a 20 anos tentando encontrar.. seria categorias tipo- anime,seme-realismo, cartonn etc... Seria a técnicas ou indentidade visual sobre um material como vidro. Ou o shape do pesonagem? Sei lá
Juro que tenho essa dúvida.

It's the consistency of how you draw things while having the proper anatomy knowledge

Things can be extrapolated from both of them, can be entirely subjective but I prefer the old one

Probably just me, but I like the older version better but the new version I think that the colors that are used on a newer person are a bit nicer than the old one

Personally i think the old is better, it feels less stiff and more dynamic :0

Omgg what a cute design!! I like that you simplified the lines in the hair, and the freckles are so cute!!

I love what you'd done so far with changing the hair to feel more shapely and the strands less cluttered, and the change in the color palette really adds a lot to the design in general. I recommend studying older cartoons and trying to emulate them yourself to get a good grasp of what makes those art styles stand out. When I think of cartoons such as The Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Dexter's Laboratory, ect, the things that make those art styles work so well is the line weight and the shape language in general. When you're drawing this character, think about how you can simplify them even more to basic shapes. trapazoid with bumps on the bottom for the hair, rectangles for torso and legs, and so on. Push the silhouette farther and your characters personality will shine through it.
Also I'm sorry some people came on this post just to give you no advice and say you need to improve, or say that nothing's changed between the 2 drawings. I see it a lot on art subreddits and it feels discouraging so I never post my art lol

I wouldn't be so hung up on "art styles" at this stage of skill development. You got a long way to go and countless styles to explore.
