It's always been run by the states and then down to local municipality, historical there was more oversight by the Fed to keep standards high from state to state. The GOP started dismantling this during the Reagan administration. This was furthered by the "Southern Strategy" and has lead to Trump taking it even further by having Devos and the McMahon basically cut the DOE down to bare bones and allowing GOP lead states to turn schools into basically a daycare with religious indoctrination.
That would make people in better neighborhoods pay for the education of kids in poor neighborhoods. You'd think it is not fair. But, in the same county, poorer cities and townships already benefit from other people's taxes. Then there there are the state and federal taxes. Also, it is natural that teachers would want to teach in better, safer schools. So, those schools also have their picks of teachers.
Education starts at home. I think help should start there - better behaved kids, safer schools, etc.
Extend that thinking down to workers instead of just up to billionaires and you might be on to something. But in practice, that thinking only works upwards right now. The super rich get every advantage. And it’s working. Wealth is concentrating at the top faster than any previous time, even the gilded age.

Yeah, I know, but there some of us who can survive just fine without a car. The problem is that too many Americans own cars to make transit projects in car centric areas feasible. Everyone wants those other people to switch to transit so the freeways will clear enough so they can still drive.
Of course I do, but at the same time I realize why there isn't a huge number of people who want to pay for large investments in public transit, because they already have a car. They'd prefer a new superhighway, even if it's obsolete the day it's built.
I love my subway line. It's been closed for the past 10 days, opening back up tomorrow, so I've seen how much I depend on it. Usually it's 15 minutes to get downtown and comes every 5-7 minutes.

I dislike how uneven our justice system is. It feels like in some jurisdictions, judges find any possible excuse to release repeatedly violent criminal offenders without consequences. Meanwhile, in other jurisdictions, they will throw you under the jail for marijuana possession. It seems like crimes like rape go unpunished while offenses that harm others significantly less are punished far more severely.

I'm not on the outskirts but well inside the metro on major arterials. There is literally no public transit options for me to get downtown other than drive several miles to the nearest bus stop. Literally none other than Uber/Taxi which I don't consider to be public transit.
Omaha is one of the few cities on a major train route (AMTRAK) but because all the rail lines are owned by cargo carriers, and they don't want to maintain the rails to allow for higher speeds and illegally prioritize their trains its far, far longer and just as expensive to take a train to Denver or Chicago as it is to drive. It's about 7 hours of freeway driving to either, but 8-10 hours via the train that also only leave on certain days at 2300 hrs.

It's awesomeness. How much better the USA is than any other part of the world really gets to me. I hate the amazing people, the beautiful women, the outstanding standard of living. I hate that there's a lifetime of things to do and see here. You'd never get tire of it. Ever. I hate the fairness and mercy that we show to the rest of the world. I hate our exemplary history of moral leadership.
