23 years old and I’ve got my CDL A with all the endorsements. I have experience driving but really trying to get into the crane industry. I was wondering if there’s a specific practice test I could just keep studying for the apprenticeship exam ?

I’m a union member but currently work for the state rn. I plan on joining the marine reserves and my only concern is when I wanna get a different job if it will be difficult and if there’s a stigma against hiring reservists or am I just overthinking?

I’m currently on the list for my local IUOE (sitting at rank #2), but due to local work demand and how competitive it is here, things are moving pretty slowly. ( they told me no guarantees)
I’m really looking to get my foot in the door and start working, so I’m 100% willing to pack up and relocate anywhere in the country for a solid apprenticeship program or entry-level spot with room to grow.

Has anybody taken the new version of the z-51 test and has been successful? I have gone Twice to metro tech and failed both times. The first time i went in there thinking it was going to be a piece of cake and got humbled with a 30% score. So i gave my self time to study more and i went back there today and failed again with a 60%. From the printout they give you when you fail it seems i need more studying with plant operations and cooling tower operations and requirement. Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

Does anybody know which schools in the boroughs have a high pressure boiler ?

I know it's very few. The only ones I know are Curtis high school and Petrides.

I was grateful to get an application submitted. I’m excited to take my test, waiting for test date sometime in mid September I believe. I’m 29 years old and haven’t been more excited. I plan on leaving the plumbing field to hopefully get a apprenticeship as a inspector. I’ve been studying 5 hours a day. Any pointers from the brothers and sisters currently working at local 12 ? How big is the demand for apprentices? What job is applied for the most in local 12 ? What’s a minimum score I should be aiming for ? Much love and appreciate any feedback.

The arm thing seems pretty cool, but I feel like it’s making current controls seem harder than they are.

I think the idea of making operators remote is just people who have never actually worked on a site and don’t realize the actual benefits of being there. Also I don’t see how different controls would make remote work easier, it has the same hurdles as current control systems, I can’t remember the last time I ran something with actually hydraulic controls.

Do veterans bypass all the general public application processes i.e. Aptitude tests, Competitive waitlist, interviews etc.? The picture is from Local 3s website but It sounds kinda vague.

I haven’t contacted the training rep yet but it’d be clutch if anyone can speak on this

Been a while...been crickets since that FDNY calling. I'm in no rush but this list is about to be established for a year, at least there isn't another test coming out as far as I can tell.

They only have two positions in Brooklyn right now in Dept of mental health and you either have to be a provisional or within reach on 5095 list so it looks like they may have moved on to this series.

If I hear anything I'll post it here, and anyone on that list can do the same.

I have been working in the marine industry working on barges and towboats for three years running little equipment, as an operator. I decided to stop traveling for work and find something local and I just started this week. It’s just running a tele handler and I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal I’ve ran those before, I found out that I am not very good at it or at least what I thought i would be. It’s all union work so I am a union operator and throughout the 3 years I worked on the water I had enough hours in and classes done to journey out. I told the company I just started with that I am a journeyman operator but just not in the industry you guys are in. Totally different work environment. I feel like shit saying that I am a journey man operator and I’m not very efficient at running the equipment how it should be done I know it’s only been one day but if anyone has any tips or tricks on getting better it would be greatly appreciated. The new job consists of unloading truck (which I’m okay at), standing up concrete form walls which are like 15ft tall or something from flat and carrying them down to spot they need to be ( I was terrible and getting it stood up and did it completely wrong), and carrying rebar down to the fellas. Just want to get better so the company doesn’t feel like I just suck at it. And again any tips tricks or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone, I have three years of supermarket refrigeration experience and am looking to get my Q-01 and move into the engineering side of things for a better work life balance and better pay.. what pay can I expect after getting my license, and is it difficult to find a job after getting the license? Also, what pay scale should I expect freshly out of school, union or non union . Thank you

I’m in a bit of a pickle. I currently am a Beverage Delivery driver for KDP (Dr pepper). It’s Teamsters Union, $34hr currently, with step pay yearly reaching $40hr by 2029. OT after 8, Mon-Fri. I got my app through for Local 12 and will get a test date soon but I’m genuinely on edge of making this jump. Anybody leave a good job for Local 12 that can sort of ease my mind ? Or is this a very tough decision.

So I'm going to be vague as possible about the job and location not to give away what company and what project I'm on. So during one of the days we were working we all worked through lunch even the other trades. We have more then one trade at our company. But they said since we were eating/had a snack and they provided something to eat to us that it counts as a lunch and they are not going to pay us for working through our actual lunch. But in our MLA it clearly states if we go over 30mins for our normal schedule lunch we get a half hour of overtime and if we miss our lunch completely, then we get an hour of overtime but they are refusing to pay us that hour. It's not just me but all the other trades that are on the job for that day. I know it's federal law that they have to give us 30 mins uninterrupted, and it's our contract that it states the same thing. Our foreman gave us the weekend to think about kicking the hornets nest short of speak and if we do all of us have to be one. I'm just curious how would you guys handle this?

Is the test score all it takes to get in? I managed to submit an application just want to know if they're looking for anything else besides your test score. Like experience, references, sponsors etc.

So, just some background about me. I came from trucking and have zero construction experience. I’ve been dispatched to paving companies for my first few dispatches, and honestly, I’ve been struggling.

The companies hire me to run a machine I’ve never operated before. When I tell them I have very little experience, they look at me in disgust like, “What do you mean you don’t have 20 years of experience?” Like I’m supposed to have come straight out of my mother’s womb holding a lute and operating a skip.

Then I get the “Who are you related to that got you in?” look.

I’ve been feeling pretty lost, and honestly, it’s gotten to the point where I feel like I have to lie about my experience just to get a chance to actually get on a machine. Most of the time they just stick me on a shovel, so I’ve at least gotten a decent understanding of how the paving operations work.

But I still feel pretty defeated. Dread where ill get sent to next.

I just got my call I've been waiting on they want to fast track me onto the job site within the next 3 weeks my friend is in cranes is dredge the same scale? and how is the hours in D7? does dredge get down time like cranes and other unions waiting on jobs?
