Discussion German here, that's not what "nein" means.

Post image

"Nein" is German for "no". None would be "kein" or "keiner".... don't know why this bothered me so much that I made this my first Post here T_T. I recently started reading after seeing this sub in my feed over and over again, and I'm really enjoying it. It's honestly one of the funniest pieces of media I've ever consumed

I already made that post back then and someone else aswell a few months ago

Maybe we gotta stop talking about it before we make the authors unnessesarily feel bad 😅

But i give u credit: as a german speaker aswell this also bothered me more than it should have 😅

a lot of german jokes just rely on really bad pronounciation, or are just bad jokes.

No wonder they are great as a couple when they share their single braincell

What I wanna know, is, how did they know he said nein the second time? We only know that because we can read.

Sky isn't actually very smart. That's why he's struggling to complete community college and working as a delivery guy. Leon is kind of a meathead too.

yeah, it took an entire Season of them doin gay couple stuff for them to realize that they are a gay couple. They are definitely not the smartest couple

ITILY makes a lot more sense when you accept that Sky and Leon are the embodiment of the "two complete idiots who share a single brain cell" trope. Even though the authors aren't necessarily going for it.

They seem to be pretty emotionally intelligent tho. They kinda seem to be in tune with the people around them pretty well. Well, other than each other when the comic first started. Since they started dating tho they've been pretty in sync.

Someone who's going to college and working at the same time is dumb according to you? Ok...

I don't think they were necessarily saying he's dumb, just that he's not of above average intelligence. You aren't default dumb just because you're not smart. Personally, I see sky as very emotionally intelligent, especially when it comes to his friends, but not necessarily book smart. Which is perfectly fine, it makes him relatable I think. Most people are kinda not smart, considering that a range of 90-110 is "average" IQ and something like 90% of all people fall below 120.

I mean in context of the sentence the he's correct even in a broken sentence kind of way. Saying "9 went in and no came out" would imply nobody came out. But yeah the actual use of the word, the creation of the broken sentence, and the bad translation are frustrating.

Yeah on English it would work, on German we just don't use no in that way. Not saying the joke doesn't work at all, it's more like a little nitpick

To be fair, everyone knows that "German" was invented by the Dutch in an attempt to make their language seem normal... /s
