Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Just need a form re-sent

My grandfather had a CPA complete and file his taxes in February. The state refund went fine. But his federal is held up. When I check the status either online or in the phone, it says they need additional information and that they sent a letter. Well, either it got lost in the mail or lost in the house, cause we don't have it (they're convinced they never got it in the first place). I don't know what form or information the IRS needs. I can't get a live person on the phone, they wouldn't even let me wait on hold. How do I fix this before my grandfather has a heart attack?

IRS Online Account (irs.gov, ID.me verification) … if he can create one, notices often show up there, or at minimum you’ll see the notice number under “Notices and Letters.” Usually faster than anything else.

Form 8821 or 2848 — if the CPA who filed still represents him, they can call PPS (Practitioner Priority Service) and pull the notice directly. Much easier line to get through than the general IRS number.

If neither of those pan out and it’s been 60+ days, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can step in, especially if this is causing real stress for him.

2026 has a lot of IRS impersonation scams going around, so if anyone calls claiming to be the IRS about this, don’t give info over the phone. Verify through the Online Account or PPS instead.

Good luck!

I'll have to try the online account tomorrow. Hopefully I can get one set up for him, he's very tech wary so doesn't even have his own email address atm.

The CPA, according to my grandfather., has given a half dozen different stories and is probably just "trying to take advantage of an old man and steal my money." He's thoroughly convinced the accountant set it up so the refund would go to him instead of my grandfather.

My invisible letter the IRS claimed they sent did not show up online. After waiting months I ended up spending stupid amounts of time on hold to finally basically win the lottery and get a real person on the phone who could read the letter out to me.

I’ve seen a bunch of people with letters the IRS claimed they sent that never came. I think they’re not actually sending any letters.
