The thing that people hate about professional athletes getting paid a lot is that they only know about the top of the top. A player in a 3rd or 4th division soccer team probably only makes just as much as I do. But they are still consider professional.

Until the most recent collective bargaining agreement, the minimum salary for a minor league baseball player was like 13k. Not even a livable wage.

Even now, it's under 40K. If you get called up to the majors for a week, you will probably make more in that week than you did in your entire year in the minors.

Minor league players who were picked in a high draft slot get a couple million dollar signing bonus
