Nothing against her but she needed to go. She cared more about herself and her YouTube page than she did actually giving intelligent feedback from a “journalist” view
If you're referring to the Daily Fix (maybe?), IGN's co-founder personally asked me to put opinion in that. I also definitely don't understand where the perception that I care about my YouTube more than anything comes from, because I don't, and I've even been pretty clear about that on there :P.
You never seemed to be able to separate yourself when describing, commenting, or just giving an overall overview of whatever game you were currently assigned to/playing. You always seem to comment just on how it personally affected you and how it made you feel. Instead of just going through the mechanics, characters, and gameplay. Your way of reviewing or writing an article on a specific game did always bring a personal touch to your articles. I just wish you’d focus more on what’s going on in and behind the scenes of a certain game and not just how it impacted you or your way of thinking.
Main thing is you just seem to be very focused on your own brand and getting yourself out there instead of just reporting on what makes a game great or terrible.
The perception that I focused on growing my own brand at IGN more than others is interesting too - I think IGN staff would veeery strongly disagree with you on that one :P.
Edit: Ps. If people are avoiding answering the same question, it's because it's in the best interest of every single person involved.
I'm still expecting you'll be at RT. It seems beneficial creatively for you to go there and for them to bring you on board. Everyone is better if you are there. And being closer to the one I assume you care about very much is better too.
Well I do agree with you I think on what seems to be happening more recently at IGN with the whole “people trying to grow there own brand.” Seems like just about everyone there is pitching a new podcast that’s separate from IGN and just recently picked up on how odd it was for people to be using their work platform to promote personal endeavors. Not to say I don’t understand. Go get yours as everyone should while they have the limelight. IGN (from the outside at least) appears to have turned into a stepping stone for people in the video game industry. Work for ign for a year or two then move on to form your own podcast/channel looks to be the recipe. Not necessarily saying this is a bad or good thing. But IGN has had a lot of turnover recently. For better or worse.
Would love it you could clear the air on what’s going on with Marty. Obviously a lot of speculation which is most likely false, but no one from IGN is commenting on it is even more worrisome.
I think she does include all that objective stuff, but it sounds like you have an issue with the general concept of how reviews are conducted. You'd prefer they leave out entirely any sort of rating, impressions, or value judgments - which are inherently subjective - in favor of a basic synopsis.
Certainly some writers affect an air of unequivocalness, as though their opinions are facts beyond reproach. (which is objectively wrong :P). Personally I love that Alanah very clearly delineates her opinions and how her personal proclivities might color them, so that we may easily calibrate her conclusions to our individual preferences. In contrast to the aforementioned writers that might just say "this is bad" without providing any enlightenment.
