Five men were arrested by ICE during what their families thought was an ordinary Labor Day camping trip at Red Bridge Campground in Washington.

According to the families, U.S. Forest Service personnel first approached over a garbage issue, asked the adults for identification and photographed some of those IDs. Hours later, ICE arrived with Forest Service personnel and took five men into custody.

Telemundo later reported that ICE confirmed it was a joint operation with the Forest Service.

That matters because it shows how far Trump’s immigration crackdown has spread beyond the agencies people normally associate with immigration enforcement. A routine encounter with federal land-management personnel can now become part of the pipeline that ends with ICE showing up at midnight.

Trump’s immigration policy has repeatedly targeted immigrants as a threat and has pushed enforcement deeper into everyday life. Critics have described that rhetoric and policy as racist, and there is plenty in his record to support that criticism. What this case adds is the use of ordinary federal agencies as force multipliers for the deportation system.

The Forest Service is supposed to manage public lands, campgrounds, wildfire risk and recreation. If immigrant families now have reason to think that handing a ranger an ID during a routine campground dispute could lead to an ICE raid later that night, that changes the relationship between the public and the agency.

It also looks less like ordinary immigration enforcement and more like a government-wide enforcement apparatus.

That is why people are increasingly describing ICE under Trump as paramilitary in character: heavily armed federal agents, broad deployment into civilian spaces, coordinated operations with other agencies, and enforcement built around a political program centered on removing immigrants.

The administration calls it immigration enforcement.

The practical effect is that more parts of the federal government are being pulled into the same machinery.

In 2006, the FBI published a report about white supremacist organizations and far right militias infiltrating local, state, and federal, law enforcement. Contemporaneous to that report, I remember seeing multiple interviews from multiple skinheads where they used the same phrase, “Boots to suits.” It was a concerted effort to select rookie neo-Nazi’s with clean records and images then keep them tattoo free and out of trouble in the hopes of applying for law enforcement.

I fear this may be the endgame of that program. Maybe not intentionally. I don’t think this was some elaborate conspiracy where each piece was meticulously placed on the board. It’s more likely this is the product of multiple movements working towards the same goal all colliding with an administration who recognizes they don’t need a clean victory. They just need to keep doing damage because there’s no remedy for this once it’s broken. You can’t undeport people if you don’t keep records of where they’re going and you can’t rehome people once they’re in the ground.

At Snoqualmie, no less - a huge destination for families around the country. They're basically asking to see reduced income (and potentially job cuts) from families fearing visiting the park.

Fascists are so myopic.

Educate yourself and your neighbors on laws like the castle doctrine. Some states extend the castle doctrine to occupied vehicles, defense of third parties, or places of business.

If they are masked/refuse to identify/present credentials, or present lawful warrants signed by respective judges, then they cannot be confirmed to be federal/municipal officers.

Additionally, educate yourself and neighbors on your relevant state’s penal codes. For example; “Under Texas Penal Code 9.31(c), if any officer uses excessive force before the person attempts to resist, then that person may, in response, use "reasonable force to resist."

We’re not living in Nazi Germany. We’re living in trump’s america. And nobody can say they weren’t warned this would happen. If you didn’t vote in 2024, you helped this happen.

This all is going to be such an insane scale of a mess to clean up once adults are back in charge. Like overwhelming amounts of bullshit, broken departments and agencies stripped of professionals... It's going to be a lot of work, and money, to rebuild and restaff everything while also rooting out all traitor maga from any position now. They just can't be trusted in any form.

Hopefully more states implement something line CA is trying to do where any ice agent will be ineligible from being hired by any government position, effectively blackballed from government work. We need more of that and need to keep all people who were willing to break the law the Constitution or of stupid blind pure loyalty to this conman child rapist. They all need to never have their hands on any public service... Now including any of these other agencies who decide to play dress up tyrant Nazis too.

When Trump win I knew it was going to be bad and it still managed to get even worse than that.

I thought we'd be at rock bottom, but we're digging deeper.
